Let's say you were offered the chance to travel the world for 5 years, but it means that you stand up right now and walk away from the computer without leaving a note, quitting your job, arranging for your rent/mortgage, etc. All relationships and legal responsibilities left behind. Would it be the same answer if the offer was to travel the universe, or travel in time, Doctor Who style?

yes, immediately!

unfortunately, geographical solutions rarely work :(

Yes.

It may be selfish on my part - but I believe in looking out for #1.

Maybe. It would really depend on what the "amazing adventure" actually was...but I'm certainly open to the idea.

My creditors could kiss my fat white ass if I had the opportunity to...say, climb into a spacecraft for a quick spin around the universe...or to be spirited away to a plush tropical island full of hot, horny young maidens who exist only to serve my every pleasure...(Bitch...make me a sammich!) :p

It depends on how amazing "amazing" is.

Traveling the world for 5 years: Not amazing.

Traveling the solar system for 5 years: Now you're getting there. :)

Traveling the galaxy at superluminal speeds for 5 years: Not enough time, perhaps in more ways than one.

Being able to manipulate the human genome so as to eliminate all aggressive and self-predatory tendencies, and then somehow effect these changes in all humans: Definitely.

Be gifted an IQ of 300+ for 5 years: That could be interesting, though life afterward, presumably after going back to pre-amazing intelligence levels, at least for me, would probably cause insanity in less than a month.

"Amazing" really is a pretty wide-open descriptor.

And "amazing" differs from person to person...some of us would require mind-blowing amazing...while many here would settle for a new episode of their favorite tv show that was previously cancelled...

"Small things amuse small minds." :p

It all depends. I'd come back and have very minor credit issues.

not even close. something we choose to stay for and deem more important than a romp around the galaxy is not indicative of "life over" by any means.

In this case, if you survive the trip you'll at least have job security working for UNIT or Torchwood or something. Of course, the last thing you'll want is to have the Doctor look at you with a sad face and say "I'm so sorry..." during your first week in the TARDIS.

I could not leave behind the woman I love.

If I were not in love, yup, I could do it. :)

I don't see your man card on file. When did you say you registered?

If my daughter could go with me, absolutely. If she couldn't, absolutely not.

Nope. I would need my girlfriend and some assurance of being able to resume my life after I return.
