My opinion, poorly expressed, is you look at the component lifetime in making more expensive purchases like this which is why I say put more money into audio (which changes little comparatively) over display and CPU. My oldest components are my speakers, all over 10 years old and still going strong. Display technology is advancing quickly, and PC tech rotates every couple of years. This needs to be accounted for in purchases, what will be replaced quickly and what needs to last. Unfortunately, you see somewhat of an inversion of this model in most building strategies where video cards seem to drive the price and components better used between systems tend to get cheaped out. I'm as guilty as the rest, somewhat, but I am trying to do it right. I spent a good chunk on case/PSU, for example, even ran higher ratings for future demands, but what I could not foresee was changes in cabling requirements and storage solutions. I figure once I do upgrade heat won't be worse than my 3.0C processor, which is fortunate cause I really push the envelope there.

no, not in 1500$, but in 2500$ yes. Offcourse without those monitors. But I would get 1900xt CF over them and C2D E6700 instead of that X2.

I can't believe you only have a 6600GT with those monitors. If I was gaming I'd have x1900xt crossfire, and if I wasn't, I'd have some insane workstation card.

Read please. He built this a year (or so) ago. Go find prices from a year ago.

I'd be too cheap to spend that much on a system :p (PC in sig cost $400 total 3-4 years ago). I'd probably get an 30" Apple LCD, Lian Li Ultra Quiet Case (custom painted), C2Q, water cooling and whatnot. It's never going to happen anyway :(

Nice setup BTW. I really like the monitors ;)

edit: he also has an 7900GTO, not just a 6600GT.

dear lord you people are dense.

"I would of gotten blah instead of blah blah blah...."

Idiots he built this rig a year ago so shut your trap about "I would of gone C2D"

I would of gotten the Core 10 Octo instead of that lowly C2D. /sarcasm.

I find it funny that few found his display setup impressive, when those displays would outlive any PC many times over.

It is an impressive setup, but wondering why others didn't fawn over it is just plain silly. We've all spent fair amounts on our systems, though typically over a longer period of time. I'm pretty sure ca $5000 is what I spent. And, to clarify, he asked how we would spend $5000.

Nice stup, btw. It blows away mine on many levels.

Yeah, if I had $5000 to put into my system I'd put it into things that are going to hold value fairly well (or at least not become obsolete if the resale doesn't exactly reflect it), I'd start with adding a second sub and stick a pair of RS850s up so I'd have the four RS550s on surround/rear duty.

With half the money left, I'd get a 3007WFP and run the exact display setup Penth has.

Down to about $1000, I'd get a new CPU/Motherboard/Videocard/Ram combo.

That's a lot of money...I'd have more than $2000 left over...
I could always get a couple more 20wmgx2s I guess...

Yeah, it is an awesome display system though a bit small when I'd have friends over (my current 37" is weak as well, not to say I'm better off). Maybe if I mount 3 of the 30" sideways I can create an equivalent of about a 50" display... Actually, that would come in under cost with the current deals, once I win the lottery I think I'll do that (I don't actually play the lottery, but figure my odds of winning are about the same).

That's what the projector is for ;)

But the monitors sure are impressive, even if the hardware is not.

I just chatted with Dell and they gave me $100 back on the 30" Panel so I've got $270 to step-up to a G80 from my $260 7900GTO!

What's the requirement for a 2+ LCD setup? I always thought you need a SLI setup or a special video for that. How come I'm seeing a 6600GT and a 7900Gt in your system?

Generally you can hook up two displays per videocard.

SLI is for having two (or more?) videocards combine their power to display on a single monitor.

I have a 6600gt and have it hooked up two two 2007FPs and component out to my projector. I can only use two displays at once, but it gets the job done.

I know you can hook up 2 monitors with a regular dual output video card.

But for 3 or 4 monitors, you need two video cards, right? 2 video cars together have 4 output, right?

On OP's list, he has a 6600gt and a 7900gt. I thought you have to have the same video card to SLI. Can you have 2 different video cards in a system.

Usually someone would get one good videocard for gaming and then a POS PCI card if they want to run more than 2 monitors. Since 3d usually takes place on a single monitor, a card like a 6600gt for 2d seems like overkill for me, but yeah, you can use unmatched videocards in a single system, you just can't run them as SLI, just dual independent videocards.

Two videocards is not the same as SLI. An SLI motherboard will tend to have two PCI-e slots for videocards, but you can use those for either a standard dual videocard setup or SLI.
