I went for this:

Pic of Setup

I didn't build all of this at once so no C2D.

Memory Card Reader - $19.49
2 x 120mm Panaflo Fans - $19.98
900 VA UPS - $43.26
Microsoft Wireless Desktop 2.0 - $45.00
NEC 3520A - $61.99
Western Digital 250GB - $70.00
Sennheiser PC145 - $77.46
Seagate 250GB - $103.50
Sennheiser HD555 - $107.33
Antec Sonata - $135.99
DFI LanParty UT Ultra nF4 - $159.00
GeForce 6600GT - $184.99
74GB Raptor - $188.99
OCZ PC 3200 2GB - $195.50
Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 - $236.46
7900 GTO - $266.12
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ - $347.00
2 x Dell 2007FP - $781.00
Dell 3007WFP - $1,690.66

Total: $4,733.72

That leaves me a little bit to step up to a G80.
Obviously not all purchased at once.

At this moment, you should be in a C2D machine with that kind of money to burn. Are you actually going to build that rig?

If you are, may I suggest you checkout the various computer build threads on AT. IMO, you're building on past technology.

See the pic. I already own all of it, built from the last year or so. I just got the dell 30" monitor and the 7900GTO... Obviously if I was building today I'd get a C2D, but my machine is powerful enough that I'm going to wait for kentsfield next year.

Notice the price of an X2 3800+ is $347...

He sent me a PM recommending it.

I'd consider it except there are 2 other machines in the same room that have the Sonata.

I'd get a top of the line C2D laptop from HP (DV2000T) and spend the rest on a tri bike and a heart rate monitor/pacekeeper watch.

Obviously I spent most of it on monitors... $3k is in monitors and audio. Some of the hardware is almost 2 years old as well.

And while I could be wrong, I don't think a 30" monitor will seem as outdated in 2 years as a C2D E6600 will.

Edit: Also, I mostly work on my computer. I didn't even have any games installed until yesterday when I setup this monitor. The only games I have played this year are Max Payne 1 & 2 and Starcraft. The only reason I'm stepping up to a G80 is for DX 10 so I can use it with vista and not upgrade for a few years.

Very nice. I'm glad you invested the majority of your money on your display. Most of the geeks here will spend 95% of their budget on their box and get some sh!tty monitor. Thumbs up to you.

My response was more along the lines of $2500 for sound setup, $1500 for video, $1000 for PC. If I could use what I have now I'd get a matched set of Rockets for 2500, probably stick with my Westy 37", put $100o into PC parts and blow the rest on hookers ;).

I'll add my thoughts when Kentsfield comes out.

EDIT: FMC, does that card support SAS?

No, it doesn't. But I specifially was looking for a card that didn't, as I don't need that.
