Maybe. I bought a rifle at Gander a couple weeks ago (I'm in upstate NY) and they took my NY license to write down the number and get my info but I don't think it was a requirement that it be a NY license.

Not familiar with New York laws but in PA you just need a driver's license.

A new MCS Carbine (MSAR pistol cal) in .45 ACP with a TiRant on it. Figure $850 for the carbine, $800 for the can, $200 to the federal leech government, and hopefully the gun store will allow me to skirt the state leech government tax on the can and gun. If not, that's another $100 in tax. So $1850 if they only steal $200 from me, $1950 if they go ahead and steal the $300.

Is there a big difference between this and an AR-15?

The 556 is closer to an AK than an AR15.

In what way? Accuracy? Reliability?
It's operating mechanism mainly. A piston cycles the bolt rather than the AR-15 which is a direct impingement operation (the gas is tapped off and directly cycles bolt). Ergos are some like AR-15 (safety, bolt release) and some like AK-47 (mag release, charging handle).

It has a milled railed receiver and long stroke gas piston. There's not much change from the AK-47 design at all. They have an adjustable gas system (which some AK designs have) and an occidental safety (which some AK designs have). The only real difference between the 550 series and an AK-47 is that the trigger group is hinged instead of integral with the receiver.

The differences between the 556 and an AR-15 are too many to name. In common, they have the caliber. And uh... uhhh.... the caliber.

FN PS90.

I'm not a gun owner, but if I were to get a gun, I would get that.

I have the TM airsoft model, and it's pretty sweet.

Colt top of the line AR with rails. Or a nice sniper rifle.

I'm starting to see the needs of two AR-15s. One short range/tactical and the other long range.
Change uppers noob, switch them out. Two pins aren't that hard to take apart.

A KelTec SU-16C or CA with a Burris XTR 1x-4x. Spend the rest on a pump shotgun of some nature and a nice bayonet to go with it.

With $2k, I'd buy:
Ruger 10/22 - $200
Tikka T3 in .308 - $600
Nice scope for T3 - $500

I'd spend the rest on a good reloading setup, supplies, and ammo.

OR I'd spend the $2k on a gun safe if I didn't already have one.

Some kind of tactical shotgun for neutralizing zombies.

this as well as this or this. i love the coonan arms one, all shiny and purty like. but the compact nature of the S&W is pretty nice as well.

but if i had an extra 2k lying around id pay some bills and buy my kids stuff. if that was all taken care of id get a new carb rack and other needed parts for my bike and get it running again
