If you got a $1760 parking violation would you cry?

Seems perfect to me. It's about time someone starts checking and cracking down on this. You cannot measure my fury when someone obviously able bodied parks in a handicapped spot. Some have mental conditions that facilitate the placard, many are scum using family members placards because they are too lazy to walk 40 extra feet.

I don't see how the cop can add $880 for violating the meter. A meter violation is like a $50 fine.

Should be $880 for placard abuse and $50 for not paying the meter.

Sure placard abuse is not right but 2x $880 seems pretty excessive.

In a perfect world fraud, theft of service and probably several other offenses could be tacked on, so $1760 isn't all that excessive. Make the fines even steeper, $10,000 minimum and seize the car until it's paid. Fuck those idiots, they deserve every fine they get.

They should also ticket the owner of the placard that was being used.

But yes well deserved. The big fine will make people think twice.

They should also put a special hold on the violator so that they themselves could never get a placard of their own in the future.

You are letting your emotions get the better of you. Instead of seeing this through in a logical manner, you proposed an incredibly strict punishment that can potentially ruin someone financially.

A $10,000 minimum fine and having his/her car seized would be extremely detrimental to a single parent, or anyone in the lower/middle class bracket. If that person can't pay his/her fine or if they can't work then he/she will probably set off to a life of crimes.

Which would then be bad for society as a whole.

Someone who does that deserves punishment. Financial hardship is a consequence of the offense that was committed.

If it's something they could handle easily, without the potential for financial ruin, they might continue to think it's worth the risk. Then you've failed to deter future offenses.

Heh, I remember seeing an episode of Parking Wars. The officer wrote a ticket to a car parked in a no parking/tow-away zone. As she's finishing the ticket, the owner runs up and asks why she's writing a ticket. The officer points to the sign right next to the parked car that says tow-away zone. The owner then says "But I have a handicapped tag" and points to it hanging on the rear-view mirror.

The officer says that's doesn't mean park anywhere you want, and asks who is handicapped. The owner says "my son." Where's your son? "In the hospital."

The owner was pretty irate that the handicapped tag, being illegally used since the person it was for was not present, did not enable the owner to park in a tow-away zone.

Unless you watch them go in and come back out, don't be so quick to judge

Often you have to park there and then go in to retrieve your handicapped relative

No, people like the one getting off easy with that $1760 fine need to be financially ruined.

Perhaps you are using a placard illegally?

I agree. Assholes should just be put to death on the spot. We'd live in a much more polite society if the penalty for minor offenses was capital punishment.

Is it wrong that I don't even know if I'm being sarcastic anymore?

The article says the second $880 was for violating the meter, but it may not be accurate. There are several fines related to handicap parking that are $880

VC4461C
Displaying Placard Not Issued to Person $880.00*

VC4463C
Fraudulent Display of Placard $880.00*

VC22507.8A
Parking in Blue Zone Without Placard/Plate $880.00*

VC22507.8B
Blocking Access to Blue Zone $880.00*

VC22507.8C
Parking in the Crosshatch Area Adjacent to a Blue Zone $880.00*
I don't know anything about parking in SF, but it looks like one of those Blue Zones is right at or very close to that Costco, from what I can tell.

500,000 people have these and can park anywhere for free for any amount of time?? Gotta flipping be kidding. Obviously they just hand them out like toys in a happy meal anyway. I'm all for some people who really need it. But just like California they are liberal with everything and over do it with privilege and entitlement.

Be a fucking idiot, pay the fucking idiot tax. If you're so low as to be abusing a handicap placard and screwing people out of the spot that truly need it you deserve the book. Coddling poor behavior is what is getting this country in to trouble. Slap on the wrists only enforces the fact there is little to no repercussion for breaking the law, almost encouraging further poor behavior. Make an example and people will pay attention.

It's no different than the state supporting people on welfare who are abusing the system so they can sit at home on their lazy ass instead of working, sucking responsible citizens tax dollars. The lack of punishment or accountability flat out encourages this behavior.

Yeah I understand there are exceptions like I mentioned, mental issues, etc. It is the reason I do not report people I suspect are abusing it, they may have a legitimate reason such as picking up the disabled person like you stated.

Well remember that it's for being a land whale too.

Hey, yeah. Let's make the penalty something everyone can afford so it won't be a hardship on anyone. That will be an effective deterrent!!

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. You willingly commit fraud you deserve to suffer.

nah, they just don't care about crooked docs.

*FREE HANDICAP PLACARD WITH MEDICAL MARIJUANA PRESCRIPTION FOR WHATEVER*

Advocates are also calling for more oversight of placard approvals. Licensed physicians, and some other medical providers, must sign a Doctor's Certification for someone to receive a disabled placard.

The Medical Board of California says it's working with the DMV to improve communication about who's signing off on disabled placards.

"If a doctor is sending out a lot of these (disabled placards), we want to know," said Medical Board Public Affairs Manager Cassandra Hockenson.

A perfect punishment for abusing handicapped parking would be public tar & feathering. Except the public shaming part is much less than it used to be since we no longer know our neighbors and fellow townspeople.

put it on their facebook, linkedin and plentyoffish pages

and an ATOT sticky

The perfect punishment for abusing the handicap placard is to give the offenders what they truly wish for - make them handicap. That way, they can use the placards as they're intended to be used.

Little high but those city pensions wont pay for themselves.

What gets me is 500,000 disabled in bay area. I'm calling BS quacks issuing them out. 90% of the people I see parked in handicapped look like 100% normal. But of course like judges doctors are gods and whatever they say goes when it comes to being disabled.. Don't even get started on SSID which has quintupled last 20 years.. AKA the new welfare.

Yes, because you can totally spot autoimmune diseases and other crippling diseases by sight alone.
