I have weights at home, but just a simple crappy bench.
Perhaps I will just buy a better bench, with leg exercises and what not, and do it at home.
Sounds cheaper even in the short run.
It might be cheaper but I doubt you'll get as much out of it as you would belonging to a gym, that is if you are serious about getting into shape.

Also, being a member at a gym creates motivation that a home gym couldnt provide.

that is what I try to tell everyone about home gyms but they just do not understand it.

granted sometimes homegyms are better (if you have a family and kids, etc) but if you have 90 minutes of a day that you can use 3-4 dats a week and physically get out of your place and go to the gym, the benefit wil be much better.

90 minutes!!?
Yowsers I don't plan to stay that long. An hour at most.

Yah I was talkin about the 10/15 mins it takes to get there and back, and if you have to go change in the locker room, etc.

My workouts are no longer than an hour either. When I go do legs by themself I'm only there for like 30-40 minutes.

That sounds more reasonable.

$26/mo. Has lots of free weights, a couple of squat racks, and lines of treadmills. They have the machines, too, but I don't use em.

$34/month.

pluses - has squat rack & power cage, can use chalk, few people in early A.M.
minuses - morons who lift at night leave plates and empty "power" drink bottles everywhere

As of right now, $0 ... part of apartment complex, but will be moving soon. I really don't want to pay more than $25/mo for a membership, but it is worth it.

$45 / month at the local YMCA. It closes a little earlier than I'd like, but it's only busy one day a week (Mondays) and the most of the patrons are there to actually work out instead of just hanging out and socializing on the equipment.

Paid $275 up front for a full year "Metro Pass" at Peak Fitness which is a 24-hour gym. With it, I can go to any of their locations any time I want (some offer racquetball and other amenities). Also include in the price are all the classes (spin, kickboxing, yoga, pilates, etc.) but I don't really participate in those. Definitely get my money's worth though.

I pay just about 16.00 a month to go to the activity center at my job. It's a full gym with everything you could want (including heavy bags, medicine balls, free weights, machines, cardio stuff, etc).

Jedi, why are you bitching about the price? If you dont like, dont buy.

i want SOME personal training but not what they're pushing. they have a rigid policy. i cant just buy two sessions here or two there. i have to buy a block.

Maybe find someone with more lifting experience to give you pointers? I guess I'm lucky, plenty of my co-workers lift so I can go to quite a few people for advice/techniques.

$19/month at Bally's, but that's only after my original 3-year contract expired and the "grandfather" rates kicked in. I believe the original amount was $45/month back in '99.

I made the mistake of going with Bally's...turned out to be like $40 a month after a discount since I paid off the last 7 months together...but then there was the initial fee, which was probably like $150 or something.

Moving to Powerhouse in a month, if the numbers work out.

$32 a month at Synergy in NYC. Paid like $399 for a year and a half, they currently have a 299 for a year going on.

I pay about $100 annually for a gym membership for my wife and I through 24 hour fitness. I never go but my wife goes at least 4 days a week for about 2 hours. We definitely get our moneys worth.

$54.00 per month. Totally worth it. All brand new equipment, place is alway immaculate. It is owned by two really nice guys who help me a lot without charging me trainer fees. Plus, when I go during the day, I pretty much have the whole place to myself. I put on my radio station for the weight session and watch General Hospital while on the treadmill.

Wow, I wouldn't watch that if I was in a coma. 😛
