So a question about HOAs. How do the people making the decisions on the rules and HOA money usages get there? Is it elected from the residents or the owner of the property is the only one that makes decisions.

Depends on how it was set up.

The one i use to live in was the members were placed there by the builder. Then the members would nominate new people to replace them. That way things never really changed and they just did this over and over.

Some go by voting but most don;t vote so only the ones that have nothing better to do vote and get on the board.

Here are several stories why no one should ever think a HOA is to protect THEM.

Hmmm... I'm currently trying to mastermind a way to get me and a couple of my friends on my HOA board to prevent such stupidity. I guess I have to see how my HOA was setup.

I certainly wouldn't want to see penalties levied against a neighbor, but I would be extremely unhappy to have that nonsense in my neighborhood. I don't care about the truck, but the rest is just disgusting. I pay good money to live in a nice neighborhood, and I want to keep it that way.

That said, many HOAs are horrible and I think their influence should be tempered. Historical societies (used to live in one) are sometimes just as bad, if not worse; it's like living at an UNESCO site for some people.

If he's so rich, why doesn't he just buy a fucking ranch. This guy's being a jackass on purpose to annoy others.

I am not a fan of the HOAs but look at that guy's house....

"The 12,000-pound truck wasn't the only problem at 178 Monterey Way. For at least a year trash piled up outside the house, from food wrappers to rubber tires. The lawn got so high, neighbors cut it with their own mowers. The unfenced pool grew green with algae. Eventually, things got bad enough for the county health department to step in"

How do you feel if you have a next door neighbor like this guy? Talk about bad neighbor.

I don't have any problem with the truck, but he sounds like trash and the deal with changing the name on the businesses is just shady to be changing it that often, especially in the "health supplement" area.

I think the issue with the truck was that it was often on the sidewalk, and it weighs 12,000 pounds. Most neighbourhood streets cannot handle that kind of load regularly.

Many of you act as if a Home Owners Association is only in place to dictate how you live your life. You guys watch too many movies.

No kidding.

Number of years living in a planned community with HOA: 11
Number of times they've told me what to do: 0

There are many many communities around here that have HOA. It is very common. Hell, my condo had two! One for the community (which I still live in) and one for the condo community itself.

Its not movies its the truth. Read this thread...

I love how everyone complains about the HOA while happy they are dealing with this obviously problem neighbor. Can't really have it both ways, either you think the HOA should have acted or not. Kinda stupid to say 'HOA sucks, but not in this case'.

There was no HOA in this case. This was the town. This is the reaosn why i say there is no real need for a HOA as there are already guidelines cities/towns have in place to cover this. HOAs just let people that have nothing better to do then make your life a hell.

The village is part of a city...they have a blanket HOA throughout it.
