Hey, us Army guys are equally as disgusted, disturbed, peeved, and given plenty of hilarity by these types. They aren't that common, and if that is overseas, he is probably in an understrength Reserve or NG unit with a lax attitude about cutting out the chaff. If he's here in the U.S. in a training unit, he was probably cut no more than a few months after that photo.
Failing height/weight (and almost assuredly the PT test) multiple times in a row (twice a year is how often it is usually tested), gets you processed out.. again, unless you are in the Guard or Reserve where it's up to the commander and sometimes they are more lax about these things.

One of my classmates here has that as a background. He also served as a Marine before joining the Army, but we've all had a good laugh at that photo.
I haven't even seen any seriously out of shape AIT students here, though I have definitely not seen all of them, but I've been trying to avoid most of them.

I'd go to the gym, but the gym here is closed b/c the owner was arrested for money laundering and defrauding the gov't.

One does not need a gym to maintain muscle and burn fat.

..but it certainly helps.

I prefer a 30 mile bike ride through the countryside rather than smell Robert Paulson's tits melting away next to me.

You only have one gym where you live? Queue banjos.
Meh. Not that strange. Where I live there are 3 womens' gyms within about 10 minutes walk from my house, but the nearest mens' gym is about half an hour walk.

Half hour walk? So that's like 3km? Don't be so fucking lazy. That's a warm up jog to the gym. Absolutely perfect distance.

I started going back to the gym about two months ago, and now go 4-5 times a week. Personally, I love doing it.

I personally *hate* the gym - never really enjoyed it, and doubt I ever will. If anything, I'm glad that I no longer have a job that requires me to be in top shape and needing to do hard PT twice a day including daily gym work. Nowadays I have a desk job and it's like 3-4/week and still don't really enjoy it, just know it's something I need to do.

I could have a heart attack if I actually start to exercise after 31 years of neglect.

No you won't if you use a HRM.

Start slow... first month just walking fast 30 min in zone 3

Next month, after great results and feeling great you be able to inteval jog/walk, in fact you'll have to, just to stay in zone as blood vessels open, heart & muscles become more efficient.

two-three months later you'll be able to jog whole 30 min!

Not to mention - sleep better, won't get sick, have more energy, better sex life and the huge dividends of living longer.

Add wealth, and air conditioning.

Hunter/Gatherer no longer needed, but that's still our physiology.

This....Good call...A lot of people don't know how bad climate control is for our waist line. Another reason Gyms suck.

<google obesity air-conditioning>

I go running at hottest point of day if possible for maximum effect.

With a towel, drink bottle, change of clothes, phone, wallet, and keys? And through traffic?

Plus, I don't go to the gym there... 😛

start going. seriously. It's the best thing that you will start doing in your life

no one will judge you in the gym

too many positives to count

only negative... cost? just don't eat out 3 times a month and there you go
Heh. You want a negative? When I ruptured a disc putting down weights. Then the subsequent back surgery and almost two decades of back pain. And yes, I knew what I was doing, I had been weightlifting for almost 7yrs when that happened...

I sprained my wrist doing weights a few months ago...I'm more careful now :awe:

I am thinking of joining a Planet Fitness that opened across the street from my house. It only cost $10 to join and $10/mo w/no commitment. They have tons of aerobic machines, but no so much on the free-weight front.

At least with my back being in the state that it is, if I don't use it very often it's not like I'm out a lot of money. Also, they are crowded as hell >5pm.

lol @ geeks saying gym is not worth time and money and you can get a good workout just walking around and doing situps.

your muscles and bone density decrease every decade, you will wish you did some more strength training when you're 70 and walking with a cane because you didn't strength train.

My freaking gym has no AC... soooooo hot in the summer but I know it's better for me.

Personally I love the gym. Been going for a little over 4 years and while I have made huge improvements in the weight I can push around I'm not ripped and never will be, I don't do the diet to get that way. I prefer staying fit and strong so I can get outside and do the things I really enjoy. Just bagging peaks or running is good, but I did that for years before hitting the gym but as soon as I combined that with resistance training... dang... felt way better.

I go to a tiny gym where most of the people compete in deads, bench, or squats. We have a few who sometimes go the body building route (2 years on, 2 years off) but for the most part they all competitively lift. It sounds like a bad place for someone like me (most likely will never compete) but it's just the opposite. We have a small group of people who all encourage each other, especially nearing a meet when all the lifters start putting on their crazy shirts.

Anyway, I highly recommend the gym, if it's economically feasible for you. All in all I feel so much better since I joined. I've been able to do things I've never done before and even fixed some old strains I had from running cross country in high school.
