If you could move anywhere in the US, right now

I'm a single professional working in a global IT operations control center.. I love my work but don't really enjoy the area that I live in. I've been considering a move but don't know where I'd want to go. So far I've considered California, Minneapolis, Chicago or Miami. I've also considered moving to Mexico for a year for the experience of learning another language and another culture, but only if the depression causes me to lose employment entirely.

If you could pick up and move anywhere in the US, where would you go and why? Also, given the small details I've given about myself here, feel free to recommend places. I would need a job. Currently, I'm leaning strongly towards Chicago.

hawaii. im sick of the northeast. i've lived in the philly area all my life and while it does have it's cool parts, i would prefer not having to deal with winter and would like to have some better scenery. i would really miss philly sports though. its the best thing about this city!

Probably California. I hear it's nice there, but after how cheap things are here I dunno if I'd want the cost of living increase.

I'd stay right where I'm at and finish my college plan 😉 Chicago is a fun place, plus you could buy me beers!

The land may be nice, it's all the people that suck.

probably a medium or large town in the northeast or pacific northwest. i dont want to be in the south or the midwest.

No one wants to be in the south or midwest. 🙂

I live fairly close to Chicago now, which is why I'm leaning that way. Most of my relatives who moved out to the east or west coast never come back because of the additional cost. I can ride the rail back direct to my hometown from Chicago in 3 hours, if I want to see my family. Minneapolis is a little further, but supposedly a booming IT city. Cali has the weather, but will be bankrupt next month.
Miami has cheap real estate and a change of scenery for me. I like how Miami feels so lawless.
I'm just hunting for everyone's ideas at this point, because with my job I've spent more time traveling Europe than my own country.

My experience is that people in the midwest are as good as they come. Not too many extremists, friendly and open to new people. When my French colleagues visit the US, they always comment how friendly and ready everyone is to help them with things in public. In other parts of the country, people are either too busy for this, don't care, or have some irrational prejudice against certain ethnic groups.
I'm midwest born and raised, for the most part we don't hold onto old prejudices of any kind. I'm always reminded that in the midwest our greatest natural resource is the people, myself and all my friends who moved away come back saying the same thing (most recently one back from 5 years in Boston, he had our state flag tattooed on his arm after that experience 😛). If you're not in Minneapolis yet, I hope you find a nice surprise there. Everyone I've talked to that's lived there loved it.

Well, since you really did not spesify.. I would seriously choose the US Virgin Islands. Still the USA you know!

I think Lola has the right answer. Since I have 18 acres that border state forest, I'd like a similar situation wherever I move to. So, I'll gladly trade my 18 acres here for 18 acres on St. John.

I'd like to move into my apartment but I am currently living in a hotel right now until I get my new employer to pay me so I can move into it :-\

well, should that ever come to fruition, drop me a line, I would not mind being a Caribbean farm-hand! 😛

I'd probably move to Texas. That's where all the major data centers are so plenty of IT job opportunities. The heat would probably kill me though, but it would be a nice change from this arctic weather.

Though in reality, I rather stick to Canada where I am and where family is.

Probably San Francisco, maybe Portland or Seattle. Definitely somewhere on the West coast though, I just can't imagine myself living in the South, Midwest, or the East of the US.

If it were solely based on desire to live there and money/employment were not an issue then it is a really easy question to answer....Santa Barbara, CA.

You get spectacular cliffside views of the ocean, weather isn't extremely hot and you are close to wine country. Oh, in my scenario there are no such things as mudslides or wild fires. 🙂

I like my state. Good jobs, cheap to live, great outdoors, great food, football, and friendly (if you're not a Democrat 😛). It can be unbearable hot during the summer though.

We have our share of dumbfucks, but most "rednecks" are nice people that would you help you out if you needed it.
