If you could buy any laptop you wanted... what would you get?

Just curious to see what everyone would purchase, if price was not a factor, and you could pick out any notebook on the market.

Me personally I would go for a totally maxed out Thinkpad T61p (14" SXGA+ model) since I currently have a 14" sxga+ T40p and it nearly perfect for me in every way (Though it is nearing 5 years old now)

HP HDX laptop for my main work (need to run VM's and need LOTS of power, hence my T7500 HP 9550t i have now) with a HP T2000t for lightweight work and both synced through an Exchange server at home. Ultimate setup FTW. If i had to balance out work and weight, I would have gotten a DV9550t configured higher than i have it now.

I want the MacBook's design and guts
The MacBook Air's Trackpad and Keyboard (backlit)
The ThinkPad X300's Screen (1440*900 LED backlit)

That is my ideal laptop

They still haven't built mine yet. Am waiting for a Thinkpad with an eSATA port in addition to the 3 USB ports.

I'm not sure my "dream" notebook is being made either. Here are my imaginary specs

13-14" widescreen LED backlit
hardened screen (like that Asus which can take a crossbolt)
touchscreen
3.5 pounds or less
5+ hour battery
Core 2 Duo with 4MB cache and ULV
at least mid range GPU, but can switch to IGP for battery life
top capacity HDD (320GB?)
no internal optical drive (less space/weight)
durable

Dream laptop:
13" Widescreen (as high a resolution as possible); LED for more battery time
Screen shouldn't bend
Under 4lbs
3.5hours of battery or more.
Some kind of dedicated (preferably midrange) GPU that can switch to integrated graphics (on the fly, no restarting) to save power
Large capacity hard drive; a fast SSD would be awesome.
External optical drive, maybe mountable in some kind of docking station/media base (like you can get for the Lenovo X60 series)
Lots of RAM
Good casing, not some cheap looking plastic toy

For the first few, the closest thing that comes to mind is the Asus U6 (or is the U3 - whichever is the 13").

Thinking realistically over the past few days about what I actually use a computer for, I could probably settle for something like the X61s (even more so if it had a better resolution than XGA). The next notebook I get is going to be small - if I can get a docking station with it, I'll just get a monitor, keyboard, and mouse for when I'm at a desk.

Well I don't need it, and certainly don't need to lug around nearly 15 pounds of extra mass, but it sure would be fun to have.

if anyone cares...

i love my HP 8710p. i reciently did a processor swap out to the T9300 Penryn chip. She has a dedicated Nvidia NVS320 thats been forced drivered to a 8700M GT. 4GB of ram, and Vista Ultimate. i also have a 200gb 7200rpm hitachi deathstar. :p [you guys know what i mean]

You can buy travel batterys that clip on the bottom to give you around 7 hours in flight for playing games or watching movies.

It was long enough for my flight from LAX -> FLORIDA. BTW this is a 17incher wide.

This is my business laptop / gaming laptop / im bored and want to watch p0r.. err not that...

probably a maxed out HP HDX.

I was pretty close to buying one a couple weeks ago, but had second thoughts at the last minute... I might revisit the idea in a couple months after I get some financial stuff straightened out.

Will be buying the Sager NP9262 with quad core and dual 8800's soon which is about the best I can find sofar. There are more expensive models out there but they don't seem to have anything more that matters.

Well, let's see. Actual laptops that I would love to have:
WidowPC 917D 8800M SLI (keep wishing).
Panasonic Toughbook (Rugged waterproof kind that contractors use. Perfect to prevent "accidents" that happen at college).

Dream Laptop:
Waterproof Aluminum/Rubber Casing
14.4" 1440*900 Tablet PC screen
8000mAh battery
Penryn Core2Quad Mobile Processor
nVIDIA 8800M SLI
4GB DDR2-800
Dual 128GB SSD in RAID 0
Slot load DVD-RW Drive (with waterproof cover over slot)
6 USB, 2 eSATA, Audio, DVI-out, Gigabit LAN, Bluetooth, Draft-n Wireless, and Ultra-Wide Band Wireless Docking Station (all with waterproof housing on ports with rubber covers)
Replaceable Screen (with facilitated hardware)
Fingerprint Reader
Wireless Charger (from MIT)

I think that's it... :p

I just bought my "dream" machine, but it could use a few upgrades

Toshiba X105-sli4

C2D T8100 @ 2.1Ghz
3GB dual channel DDR2
2x 160GB SATA
2x GeForce 8700M GT's in SLI
17" widescreen at 1440x1050
HD-DVD player/DVD-RW
4.1 built in surround sound (yes, it has a subwoofer!)
Windows Vista Ultimate

The only things I wished I could have upgraded...

Higher grade Penryn processor (the T8100 is the bottom of the barrel penrynn)
SATA RAID.. stupid SATA controller doesn't support RAID.

I can't say what processor I would want, but it would be in the Nehalem series. For the chassis I would prefer either the Thinkpad T series or Dell XPS 1330/1530, maybe 1730. I would also require the screen to be LED backlit and a nice SSD drive. I would also like a Blu-ray drive in it. The battery wouldn't have to be spectacular but maybe a spare for travel. Also SLI graphics for sure. I also like the idea of eSATA, that sounds good too.

whichever would sell for the most, so I can turn around and sell it, buy the laptop I actually needed and pocket some cash.

I have to admit: if it had to be my only system, I'd get a 17-inch MacBook Pro with the 1920x1200 screen, 4GB of memory, and the 7200RPM drive option. It's a desktop replacement, but it's still thin and light enough to fit in a (long) notebook bag.

As a companion system... I'll admit it: I'd want a MacBook Air with the SSD and all the add-ons to make sure I can use it for some functions in a pinch. It's not as expansion-rich as the X300, but it has a terrific keyboard and trackpad, as well as features Windows still can't match yet (near-instant sleep/wake, for instance). That and all the rational thoughts about Ethernet and optical drives leave your brain when you see just how thin and slick the Air is.
