I am eating microwave popcorn for lunch. (yuck...ran errands on lunch hour...no time for food :() and I got to wondering about something.

We take corn and when we heat it, the water inside boils and gets released as steam, causing the kernel to "pop." Can you take other grains like wheat, barley, rye etc and pop them too?

I'd try it but *snaps fingers* I'm fresh out of whole-earth-grains.

It's probably because corn and popcorn are different things. Popcorn is a particular species of corn that has a hard outer covering and a very water absorbant starch center. The kind of corn we eat off the cob doesn't have this hard surface. Here's a link that explains how popcorn actually pops. The reason that you can't pop wheat, barley, or rye would probably be that there is no variant species of these grains that possesses a nature similar to popcorn(i.e. you pop popcorn, not corn, and popwheat doesn't exist).

I've seen poprice before.

It was done with this ancient looking thingy that looks like a cannon. It is actually sealed tight during cooking.
The "cannon" thing is set on a hot grill with charcoal and turned mechanically for a set time. With the a couple pounds of
rice in it.

When it is done, The "cook" place a hemp bag over the sealed mouth of the cannon. Opens it with a loud banging sound due to
the built up pressure.

The cook then dump the bag of puffed rice in a large pan and mix it with carmalized sugar syrup which quickly harden the rice to the
shape of the pan. It is then cut to cubes and served hot.

This predates rice crispy treats..... :)
