If you buy a 4K/UHD TV today.. what's the point?

Can any of these newer sets come somewhat close to matching the PQ of the last gen high end plasma from Samsung and Panasonic? If so, which brands/models are the ones that at least come close or at least seem to be leading the charge in trimming the gap?

The LG OLED (1080p or 4K) sets have better a picture quality (as defined by consistently deep black levels) than the final Panasonic plasmas.

We are in an era like the post-Kuro era when many still pine for now discontinued plasmas. Only Vizio makes affordable FALD LEDs, every other TV maker puts out edge lit crap on anything but their highest-end models. That means that most of the 4K tvs in the store are crap.

There is hope though. Panasonic is releasing an OLED TV in Europe next month. Hopefully it is the best TV ever and OLED carves out a solid niche in the market with more than one competitor. We will see.

Because you want the TV with the best picture quality today, and the best TV's today are all 4K?

Yep, same reason I got one. The Samsung 55" curved, it's 3D too. Got a PS4 the same day, and the curved Samsung sound bar. Big improvement over my plasma I had, not just in picture quality but everything else as well. Smart TV and more features. I am completely satisfied with it, and just in time for football.

If I want a better TV in a year or two, I'll get one then. I am not chained to this damn thing, and wasn't all that much.

LG just announced big 4K OLED sets, but they're still ridiculously expensive ($7k for 65").

I have a Panasonic 65VT60 and won't be replacing it until I can get a 75+ inch 4k OLED for a price I deem reasonable ($3k probably).
