If you are on a 56k modem, what is stopping you from going Broadband

If I want to go broadband, my phone lines need to be replaced with copper lines. It's a good 30+ miles from my house to the phone company, so you calculate the cost plus labor cost for that. I don't feel like giving my phone company $2000+ just so I can have DSL.
 
Lack of availability here. Well until now (I think). I have been stuck with a blistering 26.4 connection with no DSL or Cable. I found out recently cable is now available. I had basic installed and got the run around on the @Home service. I talked to a few people and found out I can get it 🙂 I went and got the self-install kit today, but have yet to get it fired up. Comcast can not find a record of cable being installed, therefore I have no account number for the toll free operators to work with. Looks like it will be next week before it will be worked out. Then I will probably find out it is available everywhere except my house :disgust:

I've got a fat cable running to my 3COM shark-fin modem sitting on my desk, yet I come to ATOT via my static filled half azz phone line. Thanks Comcast. Thanks Sprint.
 
You big city guys have no idea what it is like here in the sticks. Wireless just started last monday for ONLY $55.00 per month + 200.00 install, and they block port 80.

I hear ya, 87. Cable and DSL are out of the picture here due to poor phone lines and availability issues...yet Qwest and AT&T still advertise out their butts for it. :| I was in the 26.4 dialup boat, recently got the company to pay for 128k dual ISDN, but still, it's no broadband.

They've got a wireless plan here in town but it's a $600 startup fee (!!!!!!!) and $50/month. I could handle the $50/month but just can't swallow the startup fee.
The city is suppose to be looking into starting up their own broadband service but that's at least 2 years away if they actually decide on it 🙁
 
Broadband isn't available in my area at this time, but they've just recently put in optical cable. 😀

I currently use a free dialup account with no pop-up ads or a banner, so I'm happy.
 
Not available here (missouri). When it does become available, I still won't be able to afford it.

Anyway, the time it takes waiting for stuff to load is now being used as quality book-reading time.

All three. Costs twice as much for DSL and there is no cable near me.
 
i would get it but my phone lines are to old and they used something called a added main line to help or something like that

Cost, here. We have friends who bought a computer that came with dial-up access, but they already had DSL, so they offered the dial-up account to us. One of these days, when we're rich, maybe we'll get broadband.
 
It's not available in my area yet. Both DSL and cable are coming soon. The 1st available gets my business.
 
hahahhaahhah... i'll let you guys toil away at 40000 while I'm downloading pr0n on DSL at 150 KB/S

They would have to PAY ME to go back to dial-up.

Even then, I would keep a hidden broadband connection. 🙂
