if you are Asian and have a perfect sat score you still may not get in to any ivy schools

I just saw 20/20

And there was this asian kid who scored perfect on SATS and I believe he was the number one kid in his high school. But this kid did not get accepted to any of the ivy league schools he applied for.

the 20/20 show discussed privilege and racism. at least for this asian kid. did he face reverse discrimination?

oh well. what can you do. i just thought it was an interesting show.

did anyone else see the broadcast?

does anyone else have comments.

before i forget. the asian kid story was only a small segment of the show. there was alot of other interesting topics relating to privilege discussed as well.

LOL, ownage. It's the ivy league schools' way of telling you that you need to do a lot of things besides hiding in your room and memorizing all the SAT answers you bought from the black market.

So you're saying people get accepted on a first come first serve basis?

1) One of my friends in high school scored perfect SAT and ACT scores. I would be surprised if there were ten students in his class in the entire country that performed that feat. He did not get into Harvard, Yale, and Cornell.

2) Ivy League schools sometimes reject perfect SAT score students just to say that they've done it. /conspiracy theory

What else did the asian offer besides grades? sports? music? leadership?

IMO, ivy league schools want a well-rounded candidate instead of a book worm

ivy league schools regularly reject applicants with perfect scores. what's the story? they need to be different in addition to their perfect scores.

I don't think perfect scores are that rare. Since they curve the tests, you can miss a question or two and still get a perfect score. I know two people who got perfect scorse and one went to my high school.

I heard somewhere that Cal Tech (I think it was Cal Tech) prefers a student with Math 800 & Verbal 650 over a person with a perfect score. Something about actually being good at math rather than just being good at taking a test. That being said, the guy I know who got a perfect score is a genius (social too).

Having gone to an Ivy League school, I will certify that there are plenty of Asian students there.

hehe, I had a few friends with perfect scores...a few got accepted but went to Michigan anyway due to financial concerns while others were rejected. I figure that if these perfect cross-country-running, violin & piano-playing, national honor society-leading, volunteer-performing geniuses didn't make it, life would be very difficult for other candidates around the nation. I'm glad that I only bothered applying to one school :p

I'm an asian with a perfect SAT, highest in my class, and I'm not expecting to get in any ivy league schools. Just because 20/20 and the OP are naive about college standards doesn't mean all asian people are.

That's not surprising at all, especially if that's all he had. Getting a perfect score doesn't guarantee anything

Schools want well rounded applicants who are good in a lot of different areas. I hate to break it to some people, but Asian kids with really high SATs and good grades are a dime a dozen, it really ain't that rare, even perfect SATs aren't all that rare. If you have perfect GPA and perfect SATs, but no extracurriculars then that makes you look like a person who will not succeed in real life (in real life social skills are incredibly important). They would much rather take someone who is the president of a few clubs, or did a varsity sport, and also has good SATs/GPA, even if its not perfect. I knew alot of people who got into Ivy league schools and equivalents, and they were all varsity athletes or leaders in the school community.

EDIT: you have to consider that the Ivy league schools are more liberal arts based, so they are looking to turn out politicians, businessmen, lawyers, doctors, etc... these are all jobs where social skills are EXTREMELY important. If you have good grades + SATs it would be better to look at the top tier engineering schools as engineering professions are more based around intelligence/hard work and less on the social skills (although in real life you still better be able to work on a team to solve a problem or you are pretty worthless).

i am not saying or implying that this kid or even i the op was naive. in fact it was kind of sad. since if you were very rich you could buy your way into any of those ivy league schools. 20/20 illustrated a good example (Pres Bush C student).

so it really isnt well rounded that gets you in. Its how deep your pockets are and how powerful your family is.

Also, been called naive by vertimus is a joke. i just thought the show was interesting and it would create some interesting discussion. generalizations about ops with foundation is w/o merit. But lol just off topic conversation for people who cant sleep.

Thats silly to think you could buy your way into an Ivy league school, they are all worth many billions. The reason George Bush and others get in that you might not think deserve it is because of their parents position. Whether you like it or not the children of the rich and powerful more often than not grow up to be the next generation of rich and powerful people. The good schools know this, so they get these people to come to their schools since they know they are gonna be going somewhere in life. At least it means the leaders of our country get an ivy league education even if they might not *deserve* it.

What sort of chance will the 1600/4.3 kid have of being elected President in his lifetime?

Lemme guess- you're fed up with politics, and your solution is to ban all smart people from politics so it will become worse.

me too :) obviously the feat isn't that uncommon. I did, however, apply to some ivy's and am hoping that my extracurriculars can carry me

not really, i just feel like the ability and intelligence of those people are suppressed by politics and backroom dealings
