I do HR work for Fed Gov (State Dept). I have had about 20 e-mails and calls about 1 job posting I did. And I keep seeing the same thing.

Don?t be an idiot. When it says ?Note: All applicants MUST submit transcripts as verification of educational requirement.? Don?t contact me and ask ?do I really need to send in my transcripts??. Especially when you have no ?specialized experience?.
Or ?can I just e-mail these to you? when it says it has to be faxed in with a special cover sheet.
You know if you are having a hard time just following a basic job application at a monster.com type site then why would I want you?

And one that really gets to me is don?t be a ass. If you call me asking a dumb question and I take to time to read word for word from the announcement on what to do, don?t be a ass about it. Not only is the Technical assistance contact info written twice, but it is bold and in red.
We had 1 person for another job that was rude and contacted everybody, including my boss, because he did not make the job cert. Well the selecting official heard about it and needless to say was quite displeased with him for acting like that. This also was for a GS-14 (very high level in Gov) supervisory job. He was not chosen for that job.

Well no if you miss even 1 required document we cut you off without looking at any of your application. My job is to verify that people meet the min. qualifications. If they do I rank them and put them on the CERT (That?s the final sheet I send to the hiring official).

I just got one asking ?what is a GS-9?? If you don?t even understand what the GS rankings are then no you don?t qualify.

The other bad part is even with low staff today, ice here in DC, I still have 2 people laughing every time my phone rings. At least my pain brings some others joy.

Its a Fed requirement and done through monster.com not us. We, HR, do not get ANY documents. They fax in as there is a trail from there machine to monsters. With e-mail there are too many hands on it and too many ways for it to get "lost" and/or make up a reason it got lost instead of admitting being lazy and trying to get in after the job closes.

Any job openings in Vermont? I work for the FAA now, and for a raise I am ready to jump ship, haha. We are on that screwy pay band system though since like 1997 or so, I am a "H" but make 13 pay.

i don;t but i only cover 9 offices. I don;t think CA has anything in vermont.

Check out USAJOBS.gov I am sure there is something there. Also just because you are 1 grade does not mean you will be that grade for ANY job.

I am a 9 right now and will be a 11 this summer. But if I went somewhere else I might only be able to get a GS7 at another place. So a lot of people take a lower grade to get into another job/place. But if you do your job you should get a bump every year.

I got burned by the transcript thing.

The way I read the particular job opening on USAjobs made it appear, to me, that transcripts may be required but not necessarily at the time of application. In my mind if my application was chosen for further review then transcripts were needed.

I have nearly ten years of experience and was applying for a GS-12/13 level job and after being out of school that long I just don't have copies of transcripts floating around. I figured that most people with my experience would not have available transcriptions and as such that is why I interpreted the requirements as such.

Also, on your resume, don't list "travel experience." And if you do, it better be some exotic shit like tibet, top of mt everest, nigeria. Don't list some states in the same country and misspell Virginia, Vagina. No, we don't care if you've traveled there before.

Generally, i've gotten away with Scanning and emailing to the HR rep. I called them ahead and asked if it was ok. As long as the files are less than 10MB, the HR rep. typically agrees if you are nice.

As I already said Fax leaves a trail e-mail does not. If your fax machines gets my pages it sends a signal back saying it recieved them. This handshake is what we look for as proof that you sent in your stuff. With e-mail just because you click the send button does not mean I got anything.

Oh state sucks, I just apply for federal positions.

I did have to fax my acceptance letter. Luckily I am still close to campus, I just used the department's fax machine. I dunno what happens to people who do not have any access to fax.

Marlin - Email can use receipts. Also, I ask the HR to reply back to my email notifying they received the documents. I've had terrible luck with fax machines were the documents just get thrown away/physically lost on the other side.

Use return receipts. If it becomes a legal matter, check the mail server logs.
