I did say 'borderline' Xenophobic. And xenophobia is basically 'negative perception of something that's foreign'. I think it's appropriate to give that label here in this case.

Implication is not an exact science, is it? Because otherwise it wouldn't be call an implication. But yes, that was the line that got to me and made me think of bad things.

Having said that, I'm going to try and be completely honest here and say that reading the original post again, just now, it didn't give me the exact same response I had the first time I read it. I still didn't think it's funny, but let's just say that it doesn't really bother me as much now. So maybe my state of mind affect how I feel when I read stuff? I don't know.

I deal with it on a daily basis. Apparently Josh (my real name) is challenging for some people who don't speak English as a first language. I don't care. They say "Yoish"? I say "ok sure" and move on. If I tried telling them my name is Alejandro and they called me on it and asked my real name, I would tell them Josh.

I work with a large number of Asians, many change their names to Anglo names and are quite proud of them, and they all have a story about the name they picked. It's actually sort of cool, and gives me a bit of pride that they think so much of our country and culture that they took Anglo names, including my fiancée...

It does at least help mix things up a bit.

I had one day about 3 months ago where I had to deal with 5 different people named Jeff in the same day. One I met with directly, and the rest were either by phone or by email. Luckily that's rare, but that was just getting ridiculous.

It can keep me them straight if I have to talk to Wan or Yoko or Paresh or Misha or Aristides.

Agreed. I made that joke and immediately thought someone would call me on it, but nobody did. I checked back in on this thread a few times and was surprised to see the attacks on HR while my joke went unquestioned.

Now I understand the difference between a joke and the actual problem India is having with the availability of clean and safe sanitation. I took HR's OP to be said somewhat tongue-in-cheek so floated the joke (no pun intended) without thinking too much about it.

I can see both sides of the argument. If someone expects you to do business with them then they should at least be willing to give you their real name. Then again, maybe they are trying to be polite by adopting a name that their average customer might find easier to understand, pronounce and remember. When I speak with someone I just accept that whatever name they give me is the name they want me to use and do so.

If I offended anyone with my joke then I am sorry, but at some point we need to be not so quick to offend. I just happened to be of Mexican descent, and I've heard some darn funny Mexican jokes and not been offended. What does offend me is when Mexicans, or any other group, claim racism to excuse their bad behavior.

And I hope HR doesn't leave, he's a pretty level headed guy and we need more of them here in ATOT. Plus, I am jelly of his ride.

Making a statement that implies that every single Indian defecates outdoors is a little racist. As someone who is actually Indian, only the poorest(which admittedly, do make up a significant % of the population) do this. And anyone who is qualified enough to work at a call centre definitely doesn't.

I understand that as an admin, even when he posts as a regular member his disapproval carries some extra weight, but I think he should be able to share his opinion like anyone else can.

The way HR left, it seemed like he'd been ready to go for some time, and if he feels like he needs a break, he should take it. But I hope that if he does feel like coming back at some point, he won't feel awkward about it. It doesn't seem like anyone in this thread wanted him to go anyway.
