Well this thread escalated quickly. Having worked in the IT field for almost 10 years I found the post to be kind of funny, so I guess I'm some sort of xenophobe now.

Just to chime in, I usually don't care much, and as I consider myself a veteran in this mean world of interweb, it really takes a lot to offend me.

Having said that, HR post did stun me a little bit when I read it. I wasn't personally offended, but my thought was, did he really just post that? What struck me the most was the name issue. I don't think most of you are aware of how people around the world are actually naming their kids nowadays (in the past two decades, really, and maybe even before that). There really is no such thing as 'American' name anymore, as what you may call 'middle class American names' are now extremely common around the world.

Sure, it is very likely that this guy with a heavy Indian accent that just called HR wasn't really a 'Stanley', but the reality is, especially now in 2015, it's really not unbelievable if he was, and it shouldn't be an issue if so. The fact that a lot of you in this thread seem to be really sure that someone from India (with an Indian accent) has to have (what you perceived to be) an 'Indian name' is extremely surprising to me. Do you really not know, or do you not want it to be true (for reasons you probably don't want to admit)?

Anyway, it's always a bummer to see a longtime poster retires from here, and I hope HR will change his mind to just taking some time off and will be back, but I will stand with Perk on this issue.

Wow this is an epic troll fail. Somehow a troll is dropped, and in the end the person who dropped the troll got self-trolled and ended up quitting.

Weird. Unless this is all part of the troll but it seems like the kitchen got too hot and he could not handle it.

It comes from years of being conditioned to not believe them. When I worked at the call center, we had a tech support team in Manila. They would all make up an "American" name. How do I know? My buddy was a corporate trainer who regular flew over there to train them and that was the first thing they did. In my current job I have to call tech support in Central America and they do the same thing. They tell you their name is Anna or Jim and its not. Why does it matter? Well if you have to follow up and say you talked to Anna earlier, they will say (honestly) that there isn't anyone name Anna that works there. And did I mention that the level of service we receive from the overseas tech support is worse than calling AOL at 3am?

Does this mean that every foreign tech support person makes up a fake name? Nope. Does it happen often? Hell yes.

If you only have to deal with it once or twice, its not even worth remembering. But when you spend 20+ hours a week talking to people with made up names, it starts being a joke. Not because of their race, not because its not possible, but because laughing about it is about the only thing you can do other than smash your face into the phone.

It is incredibly common to have an "American" first name in the Philippines. If not an English name, then a Spanish name. Usually a mix between and American first name and a Spanish last name.

So I am not sure what your point is about Filipino names.

I know philippines have american or spanish names but the ones that are working in outsourced CSR or hired mostly do not have american names.

People are doing their job so don't get angry that them. We should not be surprised that in this society, companies are resorting to sneaky ways to make money. This is our society. We need to accept what comes with it. If you don't like it, try to make a less crooked society.

The average IQ of P&N drops some 27 points with HR leaving. This is sad. I think he is/was one of the ~3 consistently rational members here, whose comments were always worth considering in any given discussion.

That, and the sous vide thread. :(

GL to you, HR. It sounds like you've got real life issues that warrant greater attention, and no one can fault you for that.

It seems like more and more Chinese have western first names too. Whats kinda funny is they are sometimes old school western names, like Beatrice, Eunice, etc. I would think any former colony would adopt the names of the colonizers. I'm actually surprised Indians for the most part have real Indian (hard to say or spell) names considering how long England occupied India.

...don't tell me you name is Stanley. I don't believe you. I'm going to assume you are a telemarketer and hang up.

Ted, Sandra? Come on. Does everyone in India have middle class American name? What if they call the hood? "Hi, I'm Latresha"?

Calling wales? "High, this is Rhys". BS.

Just tell me the name you were frigging born with. If I can't say it then I don't care.

Yeah I just can't get into it. Sorry, I tried.

There are some people in this thread who take themselves far more seriously than anyone could possibly be worthy.

They aren't necessarily fake. I've met a number of Indians now whose christian parents gave them boring english-language names. Legacy of colonization and whatnot.

This. Although Christianity came to India thousands of years before British colonization.
