eh, im kinda tired of all the lighting thats being used such as that in that pic. i cant recall ever seeing bricks or tree bark(not that particular pic, but others) being so reflective.

Yeah, I don't think nVidia picked the greatest example. Its an obvious one, perhaps that is why, however it just doesn't look any better. Instead of it being too dark its too bright...and in this situation it looks like the shadowed places should be dark given the apparent time of day.

2 things:
1) That's use of HDR in an RTS - FPS may be different, plus it's only one shot, and when moving it may seem totalyl different to a static image.
2) It's early days yet

NVIDIA picked a game that didn't show it off too well, but maybe it's the only one they could get to put up on their page.

I prefer the HDR image, but it's not great HDR. It almost looks like an after though rather than an engine built from the ground up with HDR in mind.

ProjectOffset or Unreal Engine 3 would better show off HDR or even Splinter Cell:CT.

But then some people don't like HDR anyway.

See now those are what i call HDR, the Project Offset and Unreal Engine 3 shots.

I kinda like the left one better as the right one's shadows are too dark. I doubt I'd trade AA for it though.

Do you guys that like the right shot better think that software rasterization prior to the Voodoo1 looked better then FarCry/Doom3? It seems that way.

Hate to see what you people are going to think when radiosity comes around. BTW- HDR is very far removed from a nVidia feature- it is a DX standard and has been utilized in off line rendering for over a decade.

Glad to see the voice of reason in amongst the nonsense we see posted here daily, thanks Ben:)
Oh BTW, your reminder that HDR is a DX standard as opposed to an nV feature makes me wonder how many of the usual suspects that posted in this thread are critical because they assumed that it was an nV feature, hence it must s**k?
Maybe thier opinions will change once they educate themselves on the finer points;)

Nah:laugh:

guys, you have to see it in motion to appreciate it....at E3, the "Lost Coast" level was being shown off by Robin Walker from Valve - it's impressive technology in motion.

I think the picture on the left looks better. It might be a little too bright but its better than not being able to see whats in the shadows - which will be very important in AoE3 ;)

Software rasterizing in new games is far better than what was available before the Voodoo series of cards, so no, Ben, I don't agree with you.

However, the "selling point" of HDR is realistic lighting and shadows, and yet every one of those HDR shots looks vastly LESS realistic to me than the non-HDR shots. The lighting is far too bright to be considered realistic unless you happen to live on Mercury or if you've just had your pupils dilated by an optometrist. :p

(Granted, they could just be bright on my system, but even at very low - way too low - brightness and contrast settings, those screen shots are still too bright in the "highlighted" spots.)

Yeah..... check out that software rasterization on D3, FC or HL2. Let me know how great those titles look :)

I prefer the left side to the right side because even though its overbright, at least i can see much more detail.

HDR is a game feature. We are looking at screenshots which cant capture everything HDR can offer.

Images courtesy of Microsoft, you mean. Just because one game studio codes crappy HDR doesn't mean the feature as a whole is a wash.

See above posts related to HL2, UE3, even FarCry's "afterthought" HDR, etc. :)
