I'll just text message and so will everyone else. That way we won't get caught. Of course, the roads will be less safe since you have to look down to see what you are writing...but the law makers don't seem to care about that. They're only interested in finding new ways to write tickets.

Looks like Washington State is expected to pass a law against talking on cell phones while driving unless you can do it without using up your hands.

Looks like I'll just resort to getting a lot of text messages in my plan and texting while driving. Whether it's illegal or not, cops can't tell if you're text messaging while driving...unless you're swerving...in which case a person needs to be pulled over anyway (thus making the law retarded).

Why is that? Cell phone use while driving is a wonderful convenience. Travel salesman are able to fit in more customers for sure. If they spend an average of dealing with 10 customers a day with an average of 5-10 minutes on the phone WHILE driving...then they are able to do much more and fit in more customers.

A) It's more dangerous to text message and that's what everyone will start doing.

B) Impossible to enforce because all you have to do is hold your cell phone beneath the window.

My OP was very tongue-in-cheek and was specifically designed to pinpoint the exact fallacies of cell phone bans.

I have actually pulled pff a maneuver called:

"receiving and switching that phone call away from the email I was trying to send while driving on a back road and still having the capacity to avoid hitting a dear who flew out into the middle of the two-lane road that has no shoulders and has loads of oncoming traffic."

...because a few weeks ago I got into a fender bender by being careless and focusing too much on traffic I was merging into rather than traffic I was merging with, which, unfortunately for my car, braked quickly for whatever reason, sending my car into the back of theirs.


No matter how good you are, how fast you act, or how brilliant you are, if you willingly defend such stupidity you need to striped of your car...

as was I.


edit: talking on your cellphone isn't wrong in my eyes, but you have to accept the fact that it impairs whatever capacity your could ever hope to have.

It's the fact that cell phones are an easier target because they're more visible.

More accidents are caused by people adjusting the radio than are caused by cell phones, but no-one's trying to ban radios in cars.

Cell Phone use has never been proven to be more dangerous than driving normally. We should probably ban talking to passengers in the car as well, radio can be dangerous when you're trying to change cds or radio stations, lets ban those too. Hell, let's just ban cars because they are dangerous too!

I agree. Wholeheartedly. But to be honest..the risk is with yourself. Are there not punishments for causing accidents? Of course there are. So if you cause a wreck (whether you just suck at driving or because you are using your cell phone), you will be punished for destroying another persons property (rightfully so).

Talking while on a cell phone is a huge convenience for many people...and to be honest, most people do it quite well. I see no point for a punishment against everyone for the recklessness of a few.

The distraction. Your attention is being divided between interpreting and producing speech and driving the car. Brains work like computers, at least in terms of our consciousness - it only appears to be multitasking, but it isn't. It focuses on one thing at a time, but just tries to quickly switch between tasks to give the illusion of multitasking.

Sometimes, you focus too much on the conversation, and while you're watching the road, you just kind of forget that you're also in charge of controlling where the car is going.
