If there were a minimum $1,000 fine for speeders...

would people be less likely to speed?

If less people were speeding, less cops would be needed to monitor speeders, and more could focus on serious crime like gangs and violence. Or in low crime areas, less cops would be needed in general and taxes would be lower.

I would give the $1,000 fine to anyone going 5mph or more over the speed limit.

I think people would say speeding is not worth the risk if it meant a minimum $1,000 fine.

you're an idiot. If anything, they would put more cops to monitor speeders because they'd make that much mroe money from it. Thats pretty much the only reason LOCAL cops look for speeders. State troopers are a slightly different story.

I think there are bigger crimes that the police should be worried about right now, like drugs, pedophelia etc..

Agreed. Yes, speeding can indeed be dangerous but for the most part, tickets are for revenue and revenue alone. NOT for the bettering of society. I would suggest increasing the allocation of tax funds to the cops so that they dont need to screw people over for going 10-15 over to make some money.

That's different, most people who kill are not sane. They have mental issues. No logical person would kill another person.

However speeders are just ordinary people who have the reasoning to weigh the risk/reward of a situation and would react based on that.

A large portion of crimes are because people are poor and can't pay their bills or get the things they want (think mugging, robbery, breaking and entering, and the assults/murder that occurs during those crimes). These crimes fall drastically when the economy does well and they rise significantly when the economy does poorly.

Now, with that in mind, what will happen if a poor or lower middle class person is fined $1000 due to a hidden speed limit sign? Bingo, they'll rob, steal, and murder to get that money. Crime will go through the roof with your plan.

Yes, speeding will be cut drastically. But that is a small benefit for the large increase in crime that you will cause. More police doesn't give less crime.

Not true. What the cops would find is that they'd be sitting there ALL DAY find very few speeders.

If the average speeding ticket is $100, and speeding went down 90% with $1,000 fines, the profit would be no more.

And btw, if you are serious about stopping speeders, put dips and bumps in the road.

I find your logic interesting.

Tell me you're joking. Because that's honestly the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

WHAT would happen with poor people is that they would be LEAST likely to speed because they know they could not afford the ticket.

To say that there would be a crime wave because of speeding ticket fines is honestly the dumbest thing ever.

WASTE of money. Those don't slow me down a BIT.

In my city, they have bought these digital signs (that show how fast you are going) that cost $5,000 each. And they did a study and it turned out, THEY DIGITAL SIGNS DIDN'T SLOW PEOPLE DOWN.

I about sh!t my pants in anger over this. All they would have had to do it PUT UP ANOTHER STOP SIGNS. They're cheap, last for years, and always effective. Stop means stop.

To stop speeders in residential areas, just put up stop signs.

I think you significantly overestimate the average reasoning ability of John Q Public.

Sorry, but there are two types of speeding.
1) Deliberate speeding.
2) Unintentional speeding. (Missed the speed limit sign, there was no speed limit sign once you entered the road, you are in an emergency, you are dodging an accident, passing, etc.)

Your plan will only affect #1. There will be plenty of speeding tickets in #2. As for the rest, there are plenty of studies showing what I said is true. If you think scientific studies are dumb, then that is your choice. I can see arguing with you would get nowhere though. So I'm out of this thread.

Theres no way speeding would go down 90%. Maybe speeding >10mph would decrease, but its almost impossible to keep your car from going 5mph over the limit at all times, and the cops would just be out looking to screw people whos car drifted a few mph over the limit as they were going down a hill, or as they were passing trying to merge.

Having to focus so much on keeping your speed at exactly the speed limit would cause more traffic accidents because people would be staring at their speedometer the whole time instead of the road.

The chavs in the UK love those, more fun to drive over when joyriding someone else's car, or their own.

The emergency services hate them and petition to have them removed.

Your logic just isn't there. It would stop BOTH types of speeding because of the large fines people would be more conscious of their speeding. That is a fact.

I don't get you. Your logic is just like "...whaaa?..."

Are you going to fine the morons on the road who go way under the speed limit as well?

They are more dangerous than the speeders.
