I don't think it's absorbing the energy and turning it into matter, it's more like it's using it to convert existing matter (CO2, nutrients etc).

Think of it like using solar power to run a processing plant that takes materials and converts them to something else. At least that's my understanding of it.

I agree. Chlorophyll is like nature's little solar farm. Using solar energy to break molecular bonds and put atoms back together in the form of sugar.
