This is a terrible idea. Please thoroughly document your experience. I am collecting videos for my daughter to watch as she gets older on how to not grow up to be a moron.

You could get an abscessed tooth which could lead to a very serious infection and you could possibly die.

Don't mess around with tooth/gum/mouth infections. Get to a dentist any way you can.

I ignored a tooth ache in college for months until it turned into an abscessed tooth. I had to have an emergency root canal when I was on vacation in Palm Springs and it ended up costing me a shitload more than it would have if I would have just got it taken care of by my normal dentist. What finally got me in the chair was 6 ibuprofen and 2 vicodin weren't doing anything to stop the pain.

Ibuprofen and Listerine. Swallow the Ibuprofen, rinse mouth with Listerine. That's just a temporary solution though. Tylenol 3s or better would work splendidly.

If you can't afford to pay, a dentist will work something out. They can't just let you abscess and die.

My dentist treats all sorts of low income patients, some that just got to the US and had never seen a dentist in their lives. He basically adjusts the price to what they can pay. I suggest swallowing your pride and calling up the nearest dentist to ask. If not, try a dental school.

I can't believe no one posted a link to the last time someone did this on AT.

Call a hospital and ask if they have an emergency dentist? If not see if you can find a dentist that will script you antibiotics, and if you're lucky T3 or Vicodin until you can get in the office.

If you can't get any narcotics, beg for some lidocaine (non-narcotic) to be injected. You'll get complete relief for a few hours and the docs will give you reps for not being some low-life just looking for narcotics.

If you do it yourself you risk infection. If you have a tooth infection it can get very nasty and very painful and end up costing a lot more. Cheapest and safest way is to find a local school that has a dentistry program, or just spend the money to get it done at a professional dentist's office. In my area the local community college does it for free but you take a risk as they are new students, that being said at least it's a sterile environment and there are typically people to oversee the process.

Doing it yourself can lead to a huge amount of pain plus risk of infection or worse.

Follow this advice, for your own safety.

As it happens I know someone that did almost exactly this, vodka and all. He had a severe toothache and no dentist's offices nearby were open that day.

His description was that there were a few seconds of immense relief at first, and then dramatically worse pain. He ended up going to a dentist as soon as possible. Said it was a huge mistake.

Pretty sad when people looking for relief from pain are looked at as "low lifes".

Well, dentists get asked a lot for prescriptions from people who are drug abusers. He's not calling people who have tooth pain low-lifes. It's the people who go through the phone book finding a dentist who will prescribe oxycontin.

Yeah, like the homeless guy that broke a street full of windows and confessed the next day so he could get into jail. Unconventional, but why not do it if you've got no better option? That said I'd try the emergency room before going on a crime spree :p
