And "SH!T" in terms of wrapped gifts... I spent a few hours wrapping ALL of them (wrapping them and then wrapping the boxes I put them in) last night. :( :( :( Should I unwrap, then? *sad sigh*

I guess you took the trip home instead of staying in LA to help out at the soup kitchen. (I think that's what the dilemma was ...)

Depends on what you wrapped, I suppose. If it's clothing or other innocuous stuff, I'd leave it. If it's a replica of a Smith & Wesson, I'd unwrap it. BTW, according to the news, fruitcake and cheese look like explosives in a x-ray machine, so I'd unwrap those too. :p

What kind of ticket? I'm flying off to europe on mOnday, I have a business class ticket, would they be required to check me also? I have one carry on, and regular suitcase. AA at JFK has separate lines for the kind of ticket you carry. Well have a good flight :)

/note to self: shave the beard before boarding flight...customs might get wrong impression

The rules for carryons are 1 "personal item" and one carryon. Basically, 1 thing that fits under the seat, and 1 thing that fits in the overhead. You can't take 2 things for the overhead anymore. Unfortunately, your purse is your personal item, unless you were to stick it in a backpack or something.

I would unwrap everything. If they see anything suspicious in the xray, they will unwrap everything, and also search you. Thus you will negate most of your time gains for not checking anything.

However, your best bet is to check stuff. Overall it's less hastle. I would call the airline and they will tell you how long before you should get there. When I flew out of Rochester on Sunday, there was no line for American (what I was flying) but at least a half hour line for Delta.

I bought my dad a cheese wheel... looks like I'll definitely be unwrapping that. Most of my gifts are wrapped inside boxes, which are also wrapped.

yes you need the BP to get thru security

This is not true. A ticket will work also.

Well seeing as you already have your gifts double wrapped, I'd say why not check them instead? Then you don't waste the time that you spent wrapping. I also agree that anything suspicious is less of a hassle if checked. I went to Vegas a few months ago and silly me I had a battery charger with batteries in it in my carry on! Now if that doesn't look a little strange. So of course, they took my bag aside and looked through it, but no problems, but it will slow you down at security.

1) Checked bags also get x-ray'd, so it won't help with the wrapped presents.

2) You need a boarding pass to go to the gates. A ticket or itinerary is not good enough anymore. One reason is that you get profiled when you get your boarding pass. If your BP has a bunch of letter Ss on it, then you're getting the "special treatment." Getting to the gates before you check in would defeat this system . . .

Ah yes, I forgot about that. I've found a nice piece of paper in my bag before saying that they had opened it. So I guess they might still unwrap your gift to check it, but I guess that would at least save you from getting held up at security. Who knows, maybe they won't check yours.

I flew from New Orleans International (Nov 20) to Indianapolis International and back (Nov 30). I had all sorts of stuff in my carry-on and it was not searched either time. My checked bag, however, was opened and searched during the return flight (I know cause of the little paper they left in it).

People were bringing 2 BIG carryon items. They were struggling to get them in the overhead. One guy brought a huge guitar on the plane. I had a coat and a small dufflebag. To get past security at each airport, you were required to have a boarding pass and ID.

At those airports, security was a joke and the carry-on policy was a joke. I did notice, however, if the metal detector went off, people had to get searched by the wand.

I just flew home on Sunday with wrapped presents in my checked bags. They only care if your bad sets off the bomb equipment or looks weird for the ones that they do x-ray.

I dropped off my friend at LAX last night for his flight to China. There wasn't too much traffic but the lines at the Delta terminal to check it were out at the curb. Insanely large number of people.

Give yourself 1.5 hours that's all you need if you all you have is the 2 carry on bags.
and depending how you acquired your tickets...you can go online and print your boarding pass 24 hours before your flight. that way, you'd just go straight to the gate and hand them the documentation while you're walking on the plane.

2 hours should be plenty. I would check a bag, it isn't that hard, you can check it with one of the people outside (tip them a buck or two). Then since you have a paper ticket you MIGHT also have a boarding pass in which case you can skip the checkin line and go right to the gate and check in at the gate (again I don't know if they'll let you through security with a paper ticket and an ID or if you need a boarding pass and ID). If you do need a boarding pass then I would check a bag anyway b/c you'll be waiting in line to get your pass and just give them a bag to check so you don't have to carry it and try to fit it in the overheads. I fly out of Oakland at 6:00am tomorr and will be there at 4:00-4:15 I guess (seems awfully early tough b/c I don't imagine it will be too busy at that time of day).
