If Domenstic Partners can get benefits, why can't my girlfriend?

Mackie2k

Senior member
So our state (washington) now let's people register as same sex domestic partners, but you can't if you are just a normal man/woman relationship not married (IE girlfriend/boyfriend).

My girlfriend doesn't work (she was in school all last year), she is my legal dependant according to the IRS so I see no reason my work shouldn't be legally required to provide her benefits just like if I was married, or if I was in a Same Sex Domestic Partnership.

Seems to me, someone just needs to sue their employer to get this reverse discrimination removed.

I'm all for everyone to have equal rights, straight, gay, old, young....

But for my company to provide benefits to same sex partners (even before our state recognized them as legal partners) and not to me and my girlfriend who have been together almost 4 years.....seems like blatant discrimination to me.....

Thoughts?

Peace.

Update with Discriminatory Washington Law!!!

WA Law

Under the new law, same-sex couples over the age of 18 and heterosexual couples in which one partner is over the age of 62 qualify for a domestic partnership.

WTF!!!! So if I'm over 62 with a girlfriend, I can get benefits for my girlfriend, but not if she's 22!?

This is rediculous.

You bring up a valid point.

1. Get a lawyer
2. Sue
3. ????
4. Profit

Might even get 15 minutes of fame out of it.

I think the OP is looking for the benefits of marriage without the possibility of a divorce or alimony.

Marriage is *not* what he is seeking.

Marriage with a prenup?

I suspect that a domestic partnership is quite a bit easier to dissolve than a marriage. If so, then it is not really fair to expect the OP to get married in order to be entitled to the same benefits as a same-sex couple that essentially has a piece of paper that says they're in the same arrangement that the OP currently has with his girlfriend.

you have the right to get married, gay people don't?

So it's still OK to discriminate? I mean, it must not be discrimination since has an option - but perhaps he's not ready? There's lots of variables and you're pretty much acting like the people that GLBT community has been fighting against for years. Good job enabling.

qft. if you want those advantages, you need to marry the chick. otherwaise tell her to get a job.

I know a few places where I live who give benefits to any non-relative who has lived with you for more than 5 years. That way they don't have issues with discrimination, but that being said your state is just trying to be as fair as possible.

Exactly.

Domestic Partners don't have to give 50% of their stuff away if they breakup. Washington is a "no fault" state, meaning if my Wife has an Orgy with 50 dudes and sell's my kid on EBAY I pretty much get @#$@'d in the divorce.

Marriage is where we are heading, but until then I'd like to provide her with benefits that I work for and earn everyday, no different then what a Domestic Partner gets.

And yeah, I agree, it would probably get me 15 minute of fame, but a pink slip too......in this economy, I don't like stirring the hornets nest.

how is it discrimination?

domestic partnership = gay community's alternative to marriage.

Well shit, then maybe it should be legal for gays to marry.

Or maybe you can add an orgy clause to your prenup

Or choose your partner wisely.

Actually a domestic partnership is the non-religious alternative to marriage.

as long as legislatures refuse to legalize gay marriage, what's the alternative?

I thought going to a justice of the peace was the non-religious heterosexual alternative.

No, civil marriage is the non-religous alternative to marriage.

Fine with me, let them marry. As it stands, they get 100% of the benefits of being married, without any of the consequences.

It's UNFAIR to people who choose to not get married to penalize them. Let me setup a domestic partnership wtih my GIRLFRIEND and I'd be set.
