Because of kickbacks the US doesn't have that warning. Simply "Smoking causes (insert various organ) cancer. May complicate pregnancy".

I see your point with other things possibly causeing some of the cancers attributed to smking, but the huge increase in risk of a smoker compared to a non smkr can not be ignored. Not to mention all the other risks - CAD, COPD etc etc...working at a tobacco cessation company I talk to thousands of people in there 30's-40's that sound like their 80 - can hardly breathe, about ready to need an oxegen tank. Asbestos from breaks on the truck in front of them did not cause that. It did not cause their blackened, worthless, permanently damaged lungs.

Again, I understand you may just be trying to prove there are plenty of other carcinogens out there...but why are 85-90% of lung cancer cases attributed to smokers if we all breath in the same atmosphere.

Thanks Kyle. Well put. Black lungs, shortness of breath, the stink of chemicals and smoke, house fires, heart disease, lung disease, etc etc...

When people like something so much, some call that love, they become brainwashed or put into a state of denial.

Hey Regs, stop. I will continue exercising my rights as a free adult American to choose to smoke or not smoke at my discretion and not listen to jackasses who think they matter.

We both score one for civil rights. You said what I don't want to hear and I said what you don't want to hear.

But I'm a smoker with the same views as you.

Exactly - and especially with people who started smking at a very young age and have been doing it for 30+ years - for a lot of them, they view cig's like a friend - something they can rely on - There's an actual emotional attachment for them - some people become quite depressed when they quit - they feel like they lost a good friend that's always there for them if they're going through hard times etc. It's not just a physical addiction for them - it's all they've know for dealing with stress -it's part of their every day life for as long as they can remember. It takes "habit" to a whole nother level - for someone who has a cig to finish every meal they've ever had as far as they can remember - to all of a sudden stop doing that, or to not have that "wake me up" cig first thing in the morning etc, seems so foreign and can be an incredible struggle to stop doing it.

For the people who started when "everybody" was doing it - when it was socially acceptable and desirable - and have done it for their entire lives, I really feel sympathy for...

People who start nowadays, on the other hand, I do not have much sympathy. And this includes me - I smoked for a few years in highschool/college and it was an incredibly dumb decision. I'm glad I quit before it became too strong of an addiciton. To start now, now that we know how terrible they are for your health and how terribly addictive they are, is just such a stupid thing to do...

If a five gallon jug of water was in a black jug with skull and cross bones, would you drink it?

edit: Hint: there are MANY things are poison in sufficient quantities.

Yes, but no one is foolish enough to think that because water could kill you in mass quantities you should never drink water again. Some things are beneficial up to a point. Others are always harmful. It's hard to argue that cigarettes are anything but a poison. Sure, they may have benefits, such as reducing stress, but it's impossible to obtain any of these benefits without physically poisoning your body. There is no safe cigarette and there never will be.

well then that's stupid. last time i was in the air port (this summer) i was at the dutyfree and i saw a cigarette pack. 90% of the box was a sign that said "SMOKING KILLS". saying anything other then the truth is a lie.

I don't smoke anymore.

But when I did, I didn't care what the box looked like.

I knew damn well it was bad for me.
