I hate labeling people by race.
I call people by their name, if I don't know their name, then Mr. or Ms. usually works.

Try that when giving an accurate description of someone. :p

How about this, what if you are a South-African white person, come to America become a citizen then what? Still African-American????

I've always wondered about that too

What do you call someone in America from Ireland?

American blacks have changed their prefered label so many times they've completely ruined any chance at people taking it all seriously.

There's no centralized Black body that decides what label they want and most Blacks probably don't care anywhere near as much as we think.

It's guilty-conscienced Whites that have changed the preferred label with which they address blacks so many times....

Uh... what have they changed to/from?

I call them black in the same way I call fat people fat, or thin people thin, or attractive people attractive, as a descriptive term.

Would you call indian people brown? Or asian people squinty eyes?
Yes.

Most of my friends call me brown and I'm Indian. The asian friends I hang out with don't mind if they're called beloved patriot, squinty eyes, whatever. If there's a white kid, he's the cracker. And a black person... well, there are tons of names :p ;)

Basically, I'd say we do it out of spite in some situations just because a lot of people are anal about it. We're not anal, and don't care. If we're just doing something random like playing games, eating food, etc. then it just adds to the enjoyment. We're far from racist, we just hate ________________ ;)

What? Knowing whether someone is a Mr. or a Ms. isn't accurate enough? :D

You call him white. Just because he lived in South Africa, and his parents and grandparents did, doesn't mean he's ethnically an African. I happened to be born in Oman-- I don't put "Middle Eastern" as my race on forms.

I've always wondered about that too

If that's the case then John Kerry's wife is African-American.

I refuse to use african-american to refer to a black person, and if a black person takes offense being referred to as a black person, I'd be happy to refer to them an @sshole instead.

I live with a Fijian, and Indian and a Sri Lankin, all of whom are black. I describe them as Fijian, Indian and Sri Lankin. I refer to Maori friends as Maoris. African people, surprisingly enough, I call African. There is so much more to a person's heritage and background than just their skin colour. To lump all three of my flatmates into the one "black" category would be moronic.

And the overly PC bollocks in USA doesn't exist over here. We don't have one or two "acceptable" words for black people, and nobody is offended by adjectives.

Edit: too early, terrible spelling.

Having a tag to the American name, takes away the identity of what they are, Americans first

That's a load of crap. My flatmates all consider themselves Kiwis (New Zealanders) but that doesn't mean they should throw away their heritage and history. They don't need to be "Kiwi-Fijian", the Kiwi part is implicit because they live here.

From what I know, and for anyone who's interested, I believe the more commonly-accepted term nowadays is, in fact, black.

Most blacks I've known will identify themselves most readily with the term, "black", versus "african american". I'm pretty sure that one started with the liberal "leaders" that wanted to identify themselves more closely with their ancestors, and tried to abolish the 'black' label during and after the civil rights era of the 60's. Shoot, most black folks I've known pretty much don't care what you call them, as long as it's not derogatory, or the "dreaded N word".

Funny thing is, I work with a guy now, whose father is black & mother is white......and he's darker than most blacks I've ever met! Yet how "african" is he really??

Funnier than that, was back in the early 80's, serving on board a navy aircraft carrier, when our battle group pulled into Mombasa, Kenya, for a 5-day visit. In case you're not up on your history, Kenya was a British colony, so pretty much everyone there speaks the "King's English", with a very pronounced British accent. Imagine the levity, when the black "brethren" on the ships decided to talk to their "cousins" living in Africa, and were shocked when the slang they spoke was pretty much a foreign language to the Kenyans!! I laughed out loud, watching guys come up to the locals, spouting out stuff like, "Yo, my brother! Wha's happenin'??", then watching the shocked look on their faces when the locals would come back, in their brit-accented english, and respond, "I'm veddy sorry, but I don't understand what it is you're trying to say to me!!" It was definitely a "kodak moment"!!
