If Big Tobacco decide they want to sell marijuana

mj (for the smoking and getting high) just does not have the historical backing that alcohol and tobacco do. Would never be widely legalized like alcohol and tobacco (or even peyote).

???

There were no such things as illegal drugs in the early 1900's.

I bet they've already thought about this and will announce that they were already producing it in some huge facilities so it could be sold right after it was legalized 😛

Exactly...it's not for lack of desire, but ability.

Would be great though - divert our resources on the "war on drugs" to the more important drugs.

Oh but I know, marijuana is a gateway drug! Well, alcohol is a gateway to marijuana, coffee is a gateway to alcohol, soda is a gateway to coffee, water is a gateway to soda, and living is a gateway to water.

Therefore, lets ban life itself.

I'm already pissed that I have to smell farts and BO everywhere I go. People should really consider my feelings at all times.

What's that smell? OMG are you actually wearing Tommy Hilfiger cologne? That stuff is appalling, you should change to something I like.

haha while I agree with you about points 1 and 2, I think that alcohol and marijuana are both gateway drugs if abused. To me it's not about physical addiction but the feeling. That being said I think pot should be legalized and taxed a lot so they can lower taxes for the rest of us and concentrate on meth and e like you stated.

The problem with pot is that it is very easy to grow and process, unlike tobacco. So, if they legalize it, they won't be able to tax it because everyone will have a little garden or basement full.

Tax a lot? It should be taxed whatever they need to allow it, control it, etc. It shouldn't be taxed more to lower taxes for anyone else.

Alcohol is pretty easy to make as well. I know of several people around these parts who have their own stills. yet people still buy alcohol most of the time.

Getting it high-grade, deseeded, and pre-rolled at the convenience store might be enough for your average smoker.

Yeah, but alcohol is tightly controlled so its difficult for people to get access to make moonshine. Plus if you make alcohol wrong you can poison yourself (or go blind!). With pot, as soon as you buy some you could start growing it and start selling it without paying taxes.

Another situation is theft. Tobacco is so processed once it leaves the field that people can't really go in and steal it, with pot its much easier to process directly from the plant. In fact, the government here tried a pilot program getting farmers to grow marijuana for hemp, it contained no THC but the theft of the crops was so high the farmers gave up even trying to grow it.

I live in Canada so I have bit of a different outlook since one of the reasons I am against legalization is the US war on drugs and what it would do to Canada's import/export situation.

Myth. Sorry. It's easier and takes less time to brew your own beer than it does to grow MJ. But how beer drinkers actually brew their own? And all it takes is a kitchen and you don't even need a license to do it (not since Jimmy Carter).

Cannabis isn't legal because hemp has a multitude of non-recreational uses (medicinal, industrial, agricultural, and energy) that would challenge established industries and can't be sin-taxed.

Exactly what I was going to say, plus...

Doubtful, unless one of the big agricultural companies genetically engineers some sort of blight that kills off all the marijuana plants except their own special breed.

Yeah but why grow it when you can go to the store and buy it really cheap? Beer can be made at home and sales are just fine.

Are you not good at the reading comprehension? Alcohol and tobacco have a "historical backing." What school are you attending or did you attend? I want to be sure my children NEVER go there.

When substances became illegal, alcohol and tobacco didn't (and alcohol even survived a constitution prohibition). MJ just does not have a history of legalization and political backing like Alcohol and tobacco.

The fact that I have to explain this to you...

...so sad...
