Cats 7 dogs 5 depending on breed (i've known a lot of dumb dogs)

It is funny that some posters are stating dogs > cats, which in my experience is laughably wrong.

3) If my dog shit in a litter box I'd kick her ass. It'd smell for days. They could be trained to shit in one, but nobody want's to clean up dog shit out of one.

3 was referring to using a human toilet.

Cats are smart, dogs suck.

Scale needs to be bigger.

I don't know what to say to those who voted 9 to cats and dogs.

Ants can do some amazing amazing things. I watched a documentary on ants once... They were talking about how some ants work in factories growing sugar and other ants herd other insects for special purposes and stuff... Ants have great communication, great cohesion, solve problems, work together in groups with heirarchies, etc etc...

If it's a linear scale there's so much to cram between 1 and 10. Therefore, both cats and dogs (and probably every mammal) would be a 9.

Why don't we pick the smartest dog breed (no idea.. german shepard?) vs the smartest cat bread (main my excellent compatriot, pixie?) and go from there? My GF has a shitzu that is 100% retarded compared to my cats but i've known smarter of both species.

Poodles are known for intelligence.

How many people said dogs/cats were equivelent to a 2/3/4 year old human? I'll bet those people voted a 9...

I would say dogs and cats are 9.9 on that scale. Ants are pretty stupid as far as conscious thinking.

dogs are capable of empathy, language, and are an advanced social animal. cats aren't. Pack animals are typically much smarter than non-pack animals.

I voted 5 for dogs, and 6 for cats. That left room for some birds, lower primates, and whales/porpoises.

well then I'm gonna disagree. The cats I've been around showed plenty of empathy/language. Equally as much as a dog if not more so. All I know for certain is that of the dogs and cats that I've met in my life the majority of dogs are shit eating, jumping, barking, idiots. Sure they can be trained to be obedient lil slaves but that doesn't make them smart. And sure I've met some dumb cats, but on the whole they seemed much more intelligent. I've seen a cat stand up on both legs and open a door for itself after watching somebody (no "training"), and then watched the dog bark and whine at the door until someone opened it for them.

Dogs are born to obey. Wolves in the wild live in a pack and follow the alpha. Cats are born to be free, wild cats don't follow an alpha, rather they each have to think for themselves.

The fact that a dog can be trained to obey has nothing to do with intelligence and everything to do with the natural instincts of the animal.

Ants are also pretty smart, as a colony anyway. Some ants can uses sticks and stuff as simple tools. There are many more unintelligent organisms that would make a better one. Take a republican for instance.

This is true.

I see what you did there...
