There's a 99.9% chance of that not happening, so it should be dismissed as an actual possibility.

If I had to choose, as far as the OS goes I like iOS more than Windows Phone, but as a platform I like Windows Phone more.

id actually missed that Tizen announcement, it sounds interesting. the reality is id go with whatever on let me have the most freedom and that simply isn't apple. and their phones are too small

i actually like winmo 7 and its more open then apple

WP7, mainly because the app centric usage model of iOS really doesn't appeal to me. I don't want to have to launch a separate app to get little bits of info; though to be fair, apple is starting to improve upon that with the pseudo-widgets in their new notification system.

If you truly believe that, you should read a few threads on an apple-centric site such as appleinsider. Honestly, I think there's more hate towards android from iOS users than vice versa.

My position is I like Apple until something else better comes along. Many Apple -haters say they would never even consider Apple, even if they though the Apple product was better.

Which do you think is a worse position?

They have a far more reasonable position than you do, they are willing to pick from multiple options while you are dismissing everything that isn't Apple as inferior.

Also this may come as a shock to you but some people refuse to consider Apple because they feel every single product Apple offers is inferior when compared to it's competition. Even that is no less reasonable than your position that Apple is always the superior option.

Am not dismissing anything. I have made a determination that I prefer the iPhone over other smartphones. When that changes, I will select a different phone.

On the other hand, they are dismissing a product without ever even considering it - is that reasonable?

I never said that Apple is always superior. I said that, at this time, I prefer the Apple offerings. When I believe something better comes along, I will purchase accordingly. There was a good, long period when I preferred Dells over Apple. That changed in about 2009.

Is it really that hard for people to understand that some people currently prefer Apple products?

If we assume this happens in the near future, I'd probably go with WP7.

Long term, I might switch to something like Tizen. I also think that eventually I'll get a secondary device like a tablet to carry around, so that my phone can actually just be a phone again. Then I wouldn't really care what it was running that much as long as I could do the essentials like text and call. Of course, the OS on that tablet would then come into play.

Anyways, I voted WP7
 
What options are available? I had the N900 (Maemo) before, and sure wouldn't mind having another Linux phone.

If we're talking iOS v Blackberry v WinPhone7? Almost certainly iOS. It actually has a viable app market, and by far the best browser of the 3 platforms. And you know what? iOS seems MORE open then WinPhone7.

However, Android is pretty good as is, I could probaly keep my current phone for a few years.

There's also the possibility that Intel produces some decent phone hardware, and we can get a true Windows or Linux (Ubuntu, most likely) on a phone.
 
I'd give WP7 a shot. If Apple ever came out with a phone I actually wanted (IE: at least a 4.5" screen) I'd certainly consider it.

I don't hate Apple, I like many Apple products quite a bit.

What I, shall we say, "don't care much for" are some of Apple's more rabid fans who are to me the scourge of the tech world; the tech-equivalent of giggling teenage girls who fawn over boy bands, only there isn't anything cute or endearing about it when it's 20's to 40's+ males and the icon of adoration is a tech company and it's iProducts.

I'd sooner give up tech altogether than be lumped in with that crowd.

I don't necessarily hate Apple products, I hate the Apple company.

At first, it was simply because they made massively underpowered and inefficient computers and charged a boat load for them. They were destroyed by any Intel/Windows-based PC on the software that Apple claims to have been born for (i.e: photoshop, et al).

Now,I think they make absolutely wonderful products, though I don't really give a dick about them because I find the interface cumbersome and obnoxious--and while they are much more powerful since adopting real hardware--intel--they are still shipped woefully underpowered for every task expected of each machine (1gb on an iMac? are you kidding me?), and that fucking wheel--holy hell do I hate that wheel.I have an iMac at work, and there's really no reason for anyone to tell that I should simply not keep more than 4 programs running and 8-10 tabs open on firefox. well, of course it will slow down. Well....it shouldn't. But, I digress. It's really about the culture--the fact that they want you to believe that there cold soulless devices actually have a soul. that they instill, within you, the personality that you always wanted. It's a tool-nothing more. I typically laud Apple for so successfully taking advantage of the simpletons of the world--and yes, it's the rabid fanboys that annoy the most (the ones who don't even realize the truly powerful capabilities of OS X, only think it's "the best" b/c it looks nice on their table at Starbucks--just like all the other identical macs).

I dislike Apple's insistence that "it simply works," as you always have to upgrade (at 60%+ markup) to get them to work they way they should (As they are advertised to perform), and that they are essentially marketing a personality cult more than they are manufacturing inventive devices.

I've said many times that I think the iPhone is fantastic, that it's an amazing device. ...I simply don't want one.

It's fine with me that you buy into it--spectacular. I do not. It was never my thing, after years trying to work with various OS systems. I simply can not stand them.

I think OS X is fantastic, and probably is the best OS anywhere--I simply do not like working with it. Apple is most responsible for creating this type of argument--one device matters more than the other. Hell, the simple fact that idiots like us bring up this shit means that Steve Jobs won. It matters not what "side" you are on.

Of course, you won't change. I won't change. You know why?

mobile OS has created the Nikon/Canon model. Both have always made equally fine devices, almost essentially indistinguishable from the other.

No one is really a Nikon fan boy or a Canon fanboy--they don't really prefer Canon, even when they say they do.

The fact is--they have spent thousands of dollars on Canon lenses, or Nikon lenses. They are invested in the ecosystem of that device. They aren't going to change if the competitor comes out with a better device.

Of course--this is a much older, far more established industry which allows that type of massive investment.

You don't really have that investment with mobile OS, yet....but that's what it already is, whether we like it or not.
 
After 18 months on android i am done, my first smartphone was a mytouch 3g and after that i owned pretty much every AT&T and Tmobile phone from 2010 to 2011. Now i am just tired of android and really don't want to go back, at least until all the crap is sorted out.

1. Unremovable bloatware
2. Choppy performance
3. Battery life
4. Fragmentation
5. Update Cycle (buy a phone if you want the newer OS)
6. Locked bootloader that makes rooting/flashing difficult
7. The Bullshit you can't delete bloat or else your phone won't update
8. Piracy on android aps
9. Lack of AAA apps

I think i could keep going on but oh wells. I'm no fanboy of either side but i just like to have a easier life and don't want to become a phone developer so that my phone can work nicely.
 
This thread and the poll were intended for actual Android users to answer the hypothetical question. It's quite arrogant to tell others what option they picked and why they voted for it. Personally, I would not go back to iOS because the iphone is unlikely to meet the display size criteria that's very important to me. I voted WP7, I find the HTC Titan very appealing.

Owned almost every phone and you didn't try the Nexus S? Seems that would solve what you mentioned. Unlocking the bootloader on the NS is child's play.

I put other mainly as I have faith someone would come along with a reasonable smart phone alternative, unfortunately we lack one currently. WM7 comes the closest, but my phone should have any information I need waiting for me whenever I want to look at it. It's what I pay a ~$500 premium per year for. Glorified dumb phone OSs, the type where you need to launch a browser or application for every single task, why would anyone pay a significant price premium for this? I'm not away from PCs for long enough at any given point in time for it to be worth a significant premium to me to be able to launch a throw away app to check my horrorscope. I want my stock quotes, sports scores, messages, weather report(for where I am and where I am going), appointments, email and whatever else I want to know sitting waiting for me whenever I unlock my screen. WM7.5 seems to be headed in that direction, although it still has quite a ways to go. The rest are just pretty dumb phone OSs that can run apps, not interested at all(I have at least one of every major smart phone platform from the last year here).
