Isnt the ti 4200 a 4 year old card or so? I want a card that will atleast last me to my senior year ( im a sophomore) and i was wondering that possibly a 9800 pro could take me that long, i dun need aa or af or 1600X1200 so would this be a good choice?

Or should i wait for a 6800 gt to drop to 200 HA...

6600GT AGP8X, my next video card. My wife will be the proud owner of my current 9800 Pro. :)

The ti4200 series is roughly 2.5 years old.

I'll go along with everyone else in recommending the nvidia 6600GT

I WILL BUY ATI 9800SE with 380CORE/680MEM for $140-150 if you search. And make it 9800PRO/XT or even better at 420/760. That will take you at least 3 more years.

Why bother spending all that on a 9800Pro when the 6600 GT is coming out in a few months and soundly bests it for the same price?

Wait for the 6600GT.

Not a good idea. There is absolutely no guarantee that it will be successful. I would just spend the 200.00 on a 6600GT that beats a 5950U and a 9800XT well. The 6600GT also has all of the features of its big brothers. SM3.0, UltraShadowII, video encoder on die. Only differences are 8 pipes instead of 12 or 16, and a 128-bit memory bus instead of 256bit, but this doesn't seem to limit the 6600GT very much due to its 500MHz core and 1GHz GDDR3 memory. Competes well with a 6800nu.

Stay away from the 9800SE softmod gamble. Because even if you succeed, it still wont be near as fast as a 6600GT.

Check my sig for my overclocked/unlocked 9800SE, just be sure to get the powercolor 256-bit 380/680 version to get to true pro speeds.

Edit : also it's still on stock cooling which sucks really bad, go for a vga silencer w/some ramsinks to OC this card the right way

/py00k @ 9800se

I vote for 66/6800 gt.
66gt looks like it is going to be the best value card evar.

Oh come on wait for 2 more months for 6600gt and what you will get 128bit. If i can wait for 2 months i will buy 6800gt then, it will be around $200 then. See Delorian did overcloked it very nicely

about 2-1/2 years . . . same as the Radeon 8500 (which i had). . . . and it became "useless" 6 months ago when the DX9 games were released. ;)

It is doubtful ANY videocard will still be "useful" in 3 years - for gaming; maybe the 6800GT or Ultra and even then, i'd get a SLI MB - IF i really planned to keep it 3 years. :p

In 3 years DX10 (and unreal 3 engine) will be out . . . your 6800Standard will STRUGGLE . . . badly. :p

me? . . . i got a 'cheap' 9800xt to tide me over ( for a year; 1-1/2 years MAX) . . . clearly the 6800/x800 will not be anything but 'bottom feeders" by '07/'08. ;)

Well, this assumes (as many other posters have) that the 6600GT will be available -- that is, widely available, at MSRP, in AGP -- in 2 months. It might be. It might not.

BUT, if you can wait, it will certainly be a better deal than a 9800Pro at $200 (not that the 9800Pro at $200 is a terrible deal; it's just that you might get a card that's a bit faster for the same price in a few months). You might also consider that if the 6600GT does become available at $200, the price on the 9800Pro will likely drop.

If you're less interested in waiting, you might also want to look at a used 9700Pro or 9800 (the regular 9800, not the 9800SE), both of which are ~10% slower than the 9800Pro and running under $150 used (I just looked on Ebay; some 9700Pros have been going for as low as $120 recently, probably because a lot of people are upgrading from them and demand keeps falling. They're still about $140-150 in FS/FT here).

Are you guys not listening what i am saying?

ATI 9800SE 380/680 For $144-149 with free HITMAN CONTRACTS, unlock 4 pipline with Omega Drivers, and here you go. You have a 9800PRO which can Overclock and kill 9800XT.

Yes we hear you LOUD AND CLEAR!!!!

Are you listening to us when we say you are on the wrong track? I wouldn't care if my card was 64-bit as long as it performed better. Numbers arent everything dude. Final benchmarks are where the cha-ching is.

At higher resolutions, the 6600GT will lose ground to 256bit interface cards, but not a lot with these high clock speeds.

So hear me. Even if the softmod is 100% successful on any 9800SE and you o/c the crap out of it, you will still fall short of a 6600GT at stock speeds. So, I think thats worth an extra 51 dollars. Plug it in your PCI-E or AGP slot, whichever you buy when it hits shelves, and forget about it. No worries, no flashing/softmodding necessary. Just immediately start ripping through any game a good deal faster than your o/c'd 9800XT or 5950U.

OP - I like my 9800SE and got very lucky, but at this point in the market would only buy one if they were ~100 or so or unless you can't wait for a 6600GT and don't have the money for an authentic 9800 pro

6600GT>9800pro>9800se (possibly softmoddable)

i dun need aa or af
They're actaully going to let you graduate!?! j/k :)

Welcome to AT. As everyone else has recommended, go with the 6600GT when it comes out.

Oh come on wait for 2 more months for 6600gt and what you will get 128bit. If i can wait for 2 months i will buy 6800gt then, it will be around $200 then. See Delorian did overcloked it very nicely

The mythical price war has been talked about since about May, and has yet to happen. The 6800GT will NOT be $200 in 2 months. You can keep on believing that if you want to, but that will not make it so.

Are you guys not listening what i am saying?

We hear you, we're listening, we just disagree, and from the your sig....
ATI 9600 128BIT 325/400 @ 425/500
...you aren't even following your own advice. Not everyone wants to buy hardware with the intention of risking breakage the moment they get i home, just to have it run possibly as well as a part that is $50 more. What do you do if you fry the card? Buy another one? That's $300 for a $150 card...
