It would have to be enough to offset the cost of keeping the computer on at least, so somehwere in the middle...a dollar an hour sounds good to me.

It costs nowhere NEAR $1/hr. to keep your computer on. I voted for $0.05/hr.

That seems like a bit too much. I personally would be happy with $.10 an hour.

Hell yeah, as long as the project was worthwhile. I'm already crunching for http://www.climateprediction.net for free.

Let's assume it's for developing new artificial sweeteners.
I'd never participate in a project that solely benefits a for-profit company unless they involved me in some sort of profit-sharing scheme. I'd crunch for free only if there was a guarantee I'd reap some benefit for my effort later on.

Ok, what about if it was for developing new heart care drugs?

I'd seriously consider it, especially if they promised to limit their advertising budget to something reasonable (not like the budget for Cialis or Viagra or other huge drugs). :)

Feeling out a new business idea?

Actually no, because I don't have the budget for the servers needed. Also, I'm sure some corporation has thought this up and done a feasibility study, and determined it not feasible, because it's obvious enough that if it was doable, we would have hear something about it.

I know it doesn't take near that much to keep a computer running, but after the cost of that is removed, I want something still for donating my computer to help out, even though if I REALLY cared I would do it for free, but this is America.

I remember Process Tree tried this out in the late '90s and failed. :(

Yeah, there are several things this would take to make work. One, CASH payments, per month. Two, a lot of capital and server power. Three, a good reputation. Four, and easy to use an efficient client. Five, smart and carefull advertising.

instead of doing it per hour, should do it per work unit, that way you can earn more if you have a faster computer!

Well, yes, realistically that's what would happen, but it's easier to ask the question that way.
