IExplore.exe kernel32.dll error

😕
A client brought in a P3-800 system (Asus P3BF mobo, 256MB SDRAM, GeForce2 MX-400 w/ Asus 12.90 driver) running WIN98SE with all updates/patches applied. The system runs fine with one exception:

If Internet Explorer is accessed via the Start / Programs menu or the desktop icon, it runs fine. However, if IE is accessed via the Start / Favorites route, it crashes the first time and generates an error message reporting a page fault error in kernel32.dll - and it is impossible to close that error message box (and Task Manager won't run to shut it down) but it is possible to move that window aside to a corner of the desktop. The second and subsequent IE accesses using this same Start / Favorites works fine ?!?

We're really stumped here - any suggestions?
Thanks, guys.

try....

from folder options/file types - scroll down, highlight and remove "internet shortcuts". reboot. reinstall IE6.
