IE6 locks pC on exit

I have an ongoing problem with IE6 locking my PC for up to 60secs on closing. It's an intermittent fault and seems to occur more when I've been surfing for a while and perhaps had 3-4 windows open at the same time.

Something, perhaps related, is that I tried enlarging the Temp Internet Files Folder which was set to zero when I looked (but I'm certain it couldn't have been really). However, when moving the slider it registers nothing and whatever I type into box adjacent I get a message telling me to enter a number between 1 and zero! Needless to say it will not accept a number lower than 1.

Now, somehow, this must change because I've just checked and the temp folder is set to 32000MB, but I just know at some stage when I visit it, it will have reset to zero.

I'm running XP Pro with SP2. Also, Norton AV2004, PestPatrol and Spybot S&D, all regularly updated. I do also run SmartProtectorPro, which I thought might be causing the problem (cleaning up when IE6 exits), but I disabled all its settings to check and the problem still persists.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Thanks

Peter

OK here it is - I hope it means a lot more to you than it does me!

Many thanks:

I bet it's pest patrol. I had problems with that program as well. And I don't think it's worth wile to have it running in the background taking up resources. I would just use spybot search and destroys immunization engine on top of XP SP2 IE security. The only thing left to download on my system is tracking cookies that could be taking care of a daily scan using Adaware SE.

If you want to uninstall then reinstall Pest Patrol, that could work. In my opinion you should leave it from running in the background tasks.

Thanks for that; happy to give it a try.

I've disabled PestPatrol for now and we'll see if it makes a difference.

Cheers

UPDATE

JUst checked my temp internet folder settings again and the space has changed - somehow - to 10683MB.

I'm sure that, once set to a figure, this should remain static unless physically changed - shouldn't it?

With all the 3rd party browser programs running in your background tasks, any one of them could of very well toyed with settings of IE.

Ok - so what are referring to as 3rd Party browser programmes?

I can then eliminate them one by one and perhaps see if this helps.

Cheers
