What are you going to do when the guy got YOUR license number and tells the police YOU hit him and drove away from the accident?

I'm guessing the OP didn't even think to honk when he got hit to alert the truck to stop nor thought about following the truck to get it's license plate number or get him to stop.

LOL! WUT? He is at fault, your rates wouldn't have gone up.

I used to date a chick who got 2 tickets in a matter of weeks. Her insurance company cancelled her policy AND cancelled her roommate's policy who had absolutely nothing to do with either ticket, wasn't in the car, wasn't even in the same COUNTY when they happened. They cancelled the roommate's policy just because she lived with someone else they were cancelling.

Just because it seems logical to you doesn't mean it's logical to the insurance company.

It would have been better to get out and attempt to get the plate. You're not supposed to move your vehicle in a hit and run.

ok maybe I should not have mentioned that single sentence did not realize it was going to cause a HUGE dramatic freak out.

But yeah I was in state of shock, and my mistake is I should have hit the horn when I saw he was turning towards me, but not sure if that would have been been enough, he went pretty quick.

I could not have followed him as there was more traffic coming and I had to sit there a good minute before I could get to turn. (no stop signs, and highway type traffic) Really there should be a no left turn sign there TBH.

Sure. Since no one was injured and he's in the middle of a busy intersection, the first thing the police would have told him when they got on the scene would be to move his car to the side of the road so they could safely speak to him.

Aren't you glad you brought it up? A bunch of armchair quarterbacks telling you what you should have done after the fact. Few, if any, read your post, so they don't even understand the circumstances.

Then, to top it off, you get a bunch on yanks telling you how it's done here when they are clueless how things work in Canada.

where the hell do you live that a non-injury accident gets a police response?
? Should be everywhere; getting a statement and documenting the accident is a police duty and they will respond to the scene. Insurance usually requires a copy of the police report.

Wat? You left without exchanging info??
This.
This...kind of.

From what I understand that asshole did a hit and run on you. And you're fine with that? Shit man, why bother with insurance if you're not going to use it (even if it is his insurance that pays)?

And while it's nice that you don't want to hold up traffic, you can always arrange with the other driver to pull off on to a side street. I was in a car (passenger, not driver) that rear ended a car on an off ramp (it was slow speed, no visible damage). Our driver got out, talked to the lady he hit, and agreed to drive to a parking lot that was only ~300 meters from the off ramp. Basically, you don't have to hold up traffic to exchange insurance.

Here in Boston area, you get a cop for anything you want.

Good luck with that. I was rear-ended once on Memorial Drive and called the police, since no one was injured they told me to just exchange my information with the other driver.

If you're within 24 hours of the accident, you can still attempt to fix the situation. Go to your local police station immediately and file a report and explain what happened. Yes, you are allowed to be an idiot for a while (use the "shock" excuse) but not for much longer than 24 hours.

Of course, if you don't have any information on the other truck, you probably won't get much help except as a preemptive defense.

Hah, not State Police on Storrow. They'll come blazing out there. And Cambridge police should have done something for you.

He said he was pulling out of a Wendy's parking lot. That's a fast food restaurant.

In any case, even if he were in a busy intersection, the officers arriving would have taken note of the car's position and that key fact would be included in the police report.

THEN they'd ask him to move it.

No, they won't, the part of Memorial Drive where I was rear-ended(Mt. Auburn St/Fresh Pond Parkway/Memorial Drive Intersection) is State Police controlled. They were the one's that weren't going to come by even though the State Police Barracks is only about a mile away.

OP - did you patch up the blinker fluid leak at least?

Yeah thankfully the fluid bulb was not bursted so I did not lose any fluid. The water on the ground is actually from the melting snow. They told me they'll check the fluid pressure of both head lights after as sometimes incidents like this cause an inbalance in pressure which can cause one head light to receive too much voltage, and the other to receive not enough, this can even cause the car to pull in one direction. Mechanics... glad they're around and know what they're talking about!

Also I called the police just to report it and also mentioned that I probably should have called right there and then. I was just in state of shock, not to mention hungry, and just wanted to get out of that zoo of an intersection and go home to eat my burger. :p

The guy who answered was nice about it and basically said "don't worry about it" to the fact that I did not call right away and told me to call the aggressive driver hot line to report it which he gave me the number for. They at least keep it as a record. I don't expect them to be able to do much, but it's recorded.

Way I look at this, shit happens. It sucks, but it happens.

here the cops will laugh at you. i've never had insurance ask for a copy of the police report. i had a hit and run and dispatch was far more interested in the sheet metal sitting on the freeway than me.

That sucks, I've had State police respond to my 911s multiple times around the Storrow/Memorial intersections. Out of all the times I was rear ended, it was always on these STate Rds.

That's better, but in in the US - we do not accept shit that happens unless it is an "act of God". We find someone to blame.

How was he supposed to exchange info during a hit-and-run? Scribble it out on a piece of paper, wrap it around a rock, and throw it in the general fucking direction of the assailant who's driving away?

I would. :D
