Ideas on why I should give PC gaming another try

I got out of pc gaming for awhile, for one reason. Its so tough to get to run. Endless upgrades, and I could never ever run the games how I wanted them to run. Consoles aren't like that, everything runs, good or bad, but thats how it runs. Now, I'm looking at console games, and they aren't complicated enough for me. I also have this intense want mod my gaming experience, which is something so lacking on the console. Console gaming can be rather simple at times. Plus I can't cheat on any of my 360 games.

Anyways, my current system.
E2160 Dual Core @ 3.2Ghz
7800GTX
2Gigs Ram.

Should I even keep trying PC gaming or should I just give up?

If you're gonna cheat then just give it up.

EDIT>> Actually, cheating is just dumbing down the game, so console gaming is right up your alley.

Console games aren't complicated enough, but you can't cheat. DOES NOT COMPUTE.

Anyhow, the 7800gtx is a little behind the times already. However, my monitor warps my impression of how well games run on other video cards since I try to run everything at 2560x1600.

Get a newer video card like a Geforce 260 or Radeon 4870 and you are good to go for another 2-3 years. You don't HAVE to constantly upgrade but you can upgrade once or twice in a console generation and stay current if you don't have to run at 1900x1200 with 8x AA.

As for cheating, as long as it isn't online I don't have a problem with cheating. I had to disable the soul sucking aspect of Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer because it was so lame and tedious. Yes it's cheating but it improved my gameplay experience so I could keep playing. Would I cheat in TF2 or Quake Wars? No way.

If you want to mod stuff, sign up for a mod and maybe get hired to do that for a living. You can't do that on a console, that's for sure.

I'd say you can keep the same graphics card for 3 to 4 years if all you want to do is play games. If you have no self control and you have to keep up with the Joneses, then it can get expensive.

My old 9700 Pro played every game that came out for 4 years. Not always at the highest settings, but the games were playable.

Mouse and Keyboard controls, plus game mods are what makes me play 98% of my games on the PC.

If you want long-term playability, pick up a good multi-player game, maybe something that a few of your friends also play.

Or by something more complex, do you mean RPG, RTS or simulation?

You can play defence of the ancients custom game for warcraft 3 with an old computer and that beats most console games in complexity and replay value. Anyways, I'll give you two ideas for why to play pc games over console. 1) Keyboard 2) Mouse.

And yea I know you can have keyboard/mouse on ps3 and likely the other consoles, but I've played cod4 on ps3 using the aforementioned and it was awful (more awful that cod4 usually is rather).

If you upgrade once every 2.5 years or so, you're only upgrading twice as often as a console. Pay attention to the industry and the various deals forums and this is a lot easier & cheaper than you make it out to be.

Consoles aren't like that, everything runs, good or bad, but thats how it runs.
RROD

4/10 attempt, you get a few points because you elicited a response from me even though I know your intent. Now get back in console gaming, shoo~

By complex I mean RPG and Strategy.
Whats wrong with sometimes wanting to feel godly in a RTS or an RPG. Callingin 10,000 units to squash the opposition. This is a strictly single-player view-point.

I was a pretty avid console gamer until I got an 8800GT and Crysis. The gameplay, graphics, and just about the entire presentation was years ahead of anything I found on consoles. Now I haven't touched my Xbox 360 in months. The customizability feels lacking and the games themselves are usually much worse than their PC versions. There is so much more that you can do with PC games overall.

Xbox Live is in some ways superior to PC online multiplayer because it's unified. However this is less of an issue now then it was many years ago with applications like Steam. Xbox Live also had it's own serious issues like the flawed matchmaking model instead of the ability to select individual servers.

I find it hard to believe that people are thinking of switching over to console because of things like DRM. In spite of it's problems, PCs are still superior to any console. I say that after 3 years with Xbox 360 and another 2 with an Xbox.

Yep. I tend to upgrade when my card isn't running games smoothly at low settings. That equates to an upgrade every 2-3 years. My 6800GS lasted a good while, and my 8800GT is holding up fairly well now (almost a year old and still running stuff on high).

- Hardware for a gaming PC is cheaper than ever. You won't break the bank building a mid level gaming system that can run all current and upcoming games fine. Even budget systems are good to go.

- You don't have to upgrade as often anymore. The hardware has outpaced the developers. I was thinking about upgrading my 14 month old pc today but then decided hell I don't need to. It's still plenty good enough even for the upcoming games. Well not totally true. I did upgrade to a HD4850 in August but I sold my 8800 for $100 so it cost me $50 to upgrade my video card. Cheaper than a PS3/360 game. When to upgrade is a personal choice I have guys at my LAN who haven't upgraded in 3 to 4 years and are perfectly happy.

- ATI released strong performing gaming video cards (HD4850, 4870) at reasonable prices in June/July. If it wasn't for ATI making a drastic reduction to their video cards prices Nvidia would still be ripping off gamers which in turn was hurting the PC as a gaming platform. So thank ATI by buying one of their cards.

- PC games that are multiplatform tend to lag behind the console version for their release date. However the are being improved upon, more content added in some cases and look better. Plus you don't have to pay for additional content.

- The PC versions can also be bought for up to $30 less (if you catch a sale).

- You can play recent PC exclusives Mount and Blade, Kings Bounty or the upcoming Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, and this empire total warwhich I'm dying to play.

and if this doesn't force you to PC gaming nothing will. Personally I can't support a platform where the companies ultimate goal is to force micro transactions down your throat.
Valve being forced to charge for TF2 content Microsoft force Epic to do the same with Gears of Wars extra content.

The Command and Conquer RTS series was always conducive to a mass army of imba units to crush your enemies. :D

Or look at Rome: Total War, Total War 2 for huge army fights. Also, if you plan to upgrade Company of Heros and World in Conflict are good.

We all know PC gaming sucks. Why bother? Everybody and their brother knows the PS3, Wii, and 360 are the "it" gaming platforms. I would rather be like everyone else than have to put up with PC gaming.

Also, I heard many bad things about Vista. I don't use it myself though. I use Windows 2000 since XP is just a prettier version of 2000. My sisters best friend Tina was talking about Vista though. About how the computer would shut off after leaving it idle, or how the computer would boot up to a black screen and white text saying there's a keyboard connection error. Then I heard how Microsoft was monitoring and blocking things from running on it. Bad bad bad. I hate Vista. Hate Microsoft. I can't go back to PC gaming because of this.

Well, for one, try and stick to Steam purchased games to cut down on manual patching issues.

Second, your pc is fine for another year and a half easy. You have a dual core intel, clocked to 3.2 gb with a 7800gtx. heck even crysis will be more than playable at 1280x720. Granted it wont look pretty but trust me a 4850 isnt gonna be much better.
wait another year and then grab a new vga.

In my opinion, you have power to spare. All other curent and soon to be released games will run and look great.
