You have a dual core intel, clocked to 3.2 gb with a 7800gtx. heck even crysis will be more than playable at 1280x720. Granted it wont look pretty but trust me a 4850 isnt gonna be much better.

That's not quite true. A 4850 will provide a massive performance boost in just about any modern game when compared to a 7800GTX. I'm on a 3.0GHz E2160 with a 4850, and Crysis is mostly playable when maxed out at 1680x1050. With my X1900XT, I'd have to drop down to medium settings. A 7800GTX is a good bit slower than an X1900XT, which in turn is significantly slower than the 4850.

To the OP: You could pick up a 4850 for less than $150, or an 8800GT for around $100, and they'll run just about everything comfortably. There was even a 9600GSO on sale for $36 a week or so ago, and even that would be a good deal faster than your 7800. PC gaming isn't that expensive if you upgrade incrementally every 2-4 years, and sell your old hardware.

I have a system that has a s939 3800+ X2 and an ATI X1950XTX and 2 gigs of ram that plays everything @1680x1050 fairly well. Some games like Crysis I have to dumb down a tad but still plays great. And that system is years old.

I'm most interested in strategy games like World in Conflict and Supreme Commander. I'm also kinda wanting to revisit Morrowind and be able to run Fallout 3 comfortably. I don't really want to play Fallout 3 on a console.

Also, I heard many bad things about Vista. I don't use it myself though. I use Windows 2000 since XP is just a prettier version of 2000. My sisters best friend Tina was talking about Vista though. About how the computer would shut off after leaving it idle, or how the computer would boot up to a black screen and white text saying there's a keyboard connection error. Then I heard how Microsoft was monitoring and blocking things from running on it. Bad bad bad. I hate Vista. Hate Microsoft. I can't go back to PC gaming because of this.

I sense massive amounts of fail in this post

It's shens.

Anyways, you want some reasons? How about these names? Stalker Clear Sky, Spore, Crysis: Warhead. Don't like those? Well theres Red Alert 3, Fallout 3, and Far Cry 2 coming on in a few weeks. Further down the road, in Nov. you got Dead Space, Left4dead, Mirror's Edge, and CoD World at War. PC gaming has so many good games coming out I won't have any money left by time Christmas rolls around.

edit: but maybe I will... I haven't paid more than $40 bucks for a PC game in a long time. Always a release date -10 bucks at Frys or Circuit City.

That really depends on what you think has failed. 🙂

I always enjoyed a challenge when playing games, that's why I exclusively was gaming on a PC. However, some time ago I found out that I very often like to just sit down and mow some things down. Shoot, crash, jump on or similar. The relaxing factor was increased substantially once I tried it on an Xbox360 with a nice HDTV 🙂 Not to mention there are some nice challenging games on the Xbox in the arcade section if I want them (loved Braid recently... still got 2 puzzles on the last world 🙂). Don't get me wrong, I still play the PC (HoMMV with friends, Crysis: Warhead, Painkiller, Stalker), but can't really see those games on a console with a pad (well, I guess heroes could work...). If they could be controlled so easily, I would probably skip the PC overall (and before I got my xbox360 I considered such a thought herecy 😛).

What I'm trying to say is: which games relax you the most? I like to shoot things (GoW), beat the crap out of enemies (Too Human), crash cars (Burnout) and similar while lying on the couch and holding a pad. Simple, relaxing 🙂 My Xbox360 works for me 🙂 So does my PC, but not as often as it used to.

Why don't you do both? I think the exclusive PC games are simply better, so I will maintain a good gaming rig (which I bought for about $600 from the ground up 2 years ago and still plays modern games on high settings - looks better than a 360 anyway). I'm not upgrading for at least another 1-2 years.

I own a console so that I can play the good console games that never make it to PC. There aren't that many of them, but they're out there.

I love it when people compare 2000 to XP, all benchmarking indicates that XP is better for gaming 😛

And with SP1, Vista is better than gaming for XP! I haven't upgraded yet, I'm waiting for the next big version (Windows 7?)
