I'd love to see online gaming GET REAL...

Everyone loves the battle of PC gaming vs Console Gaming... why not have the best of both worlds? I wish game developers would expand their horizons and allow some cross gameplay between PC and console - both have their own ecosystem, why not share it and gain the benefit of the volume?

They have done it many times before but was never popular. Too much effort.

Well for shooters PC gamers would mop the floor with consoles because of the much superior mouse. Although I guess it could work for other genres like racing and sports games.

Agree with the OP, I can think of heaps of games that I would love to play cross platform. Racing games, sports games, some shooters eg OpFlash 2, GTA IV etc.

I'm not sure the console guys would agree with that... I've seen some gamers with multi-axis console controllers really whoop on the console...

P.S. I'm not one of those guys 😉

It's much easier to cheat on a PC than a console too I reckon. So by keeping the game console-only, you are potentially preserving the original design/gameplay better no? That is, by reducing the chance for cheats/hacks, etc.

More like consoles guys would cry at the ownage, call cheats, even though it's just how much better the mouse is than a gamepad.

4x4 Evolution. Supported cross platform play between PC, Mac, and Dreamcast.

Quake 3 Arena. Supported cross platform play between the PC and Dreamcast.

Not true in the least. PC gamers obsess over it, console gamers don't give a shit. Don't need to go far, just step into the console gaming forum and see how many threads there are involving PC games. They tend to focus either on how the consoles do versus each other and most frequently, shocker- games. The whole PC vs Console mindset only exists in the minds of PC gamers, console gamers are far more interested in 360 vs PS3 🙂

More recently, Shadowrun was PC and Xbox 360 cross platform.

LOL! From http://www.gametrailers.com/vi...iew-hd-shadowrun/20329 in regards to the cross platform MP for PC gamers, "we can sum it up in three words: not worth it."

Granted, I imagine an already successful franchise, such as Halo or CoD would have more luck implementing cross platform play. Maybe GoW, or another third person shooter that didn't give an advantage to KB/M over the controller. As has already been mentioned, sports games wouldn't be a bad idea either. I'm pretty sure that people would race against each other in NFS:Shift on multiple platforms.

This is very much true.

I remember the days of Quake 3 Arena cross platform matches between Dreamcast and PC owners, it was fun actually, I was part of the DC owners, but we got owned most of the time, that was until the DC keyboard and mouse came out, that changed things a little bit hehe, but then it wasn't purely "console Vs PC" anymore, for what made it "console" on the DC side was certainly its limited precision in the controls thanks to the controller, but it was playable certainly, I was decent at it, I usually ended up in the top 5 or so after most matches, and almost each time the first two or three players on the score board were "accused" of being PC players and that it wasn't "fair"... ah yes, good ol' days... good ol' days.

ok - those are 'games' but - when will something a bit 'ahem...' bigger - come to play?

think TF2, Counterstrike, CoD, UT3, etc...

That's cause they have aim-assist on consoles.

Yea Quake 3 Arena wasn't big.......................it was a crappy game that no one played.

Umm Q3A was huge.

If you're talking about recent then no. No reason to. More than enough people to play with on their own respective systems.

You kind of took it out of context there, as the reason they were able to so easily come to that conclusion was based on several reasons:

1. they didn't seem to be too pleased with the game itself
2. you needed to have Vista (which was still relatively new and still suffering a bad rep at the time of the review)
3. you needed to pay a fee for cross platform playe

Upgrading to a new and unpopular OS and then paying service fees specifically for a game they weren't too crazy about is an easy recommendation to avoid it.

As others have said, it's simply too much for developers to do. There are lots of problems and complications with making multiplayer compatible for all the platforms, especially with hosting servers. I mean come on, developers aren't even putting that much effort into porting games to the PC, what makes you think that they are gonna put the effort into making a smooth, streamlined, cross platform, multiplayer? It's a great idea and it would be awesome to merge the gaming communities, but I just don't think any of the game developers financially care about that.

What total nonsense - the only time it ever comes up here is when some console fanboy troll makes a point of it.

I hope this never happens. I love playing my pc games with other mature pc gamers. I've been at friend's houses while they play 360 online and it's a total different world in there. So many immature and angry retards.

Umm... I don't know about you, but I've seen more than my fair share of snot-nosed kids screaming over the mic and typing like retards on the PC games I play.

Not near as often. I have one or two servers I go to in each game and they are always full of normal people . So it's been years since I've encountered that behaviour.
