IMO there's just not much reason to do this. People keep bringing this up because they want to play against console FPS players with mouse and keyboard, but that's obviously not a good reason. IMO cross platform multiplayer is just not a good idea unless the game is identical, and both platforms use the same input device.

It would be nice in a game like Street Fighter 4, since fighting games aren't that popular for PC, it would be nice to be able to play against xbox 360 or PS3 users to have a bigger pool of players to play against. There really isn't anything in it for the console players though since they have plenty of players, and they would then have to deal with people with crap computers and people using macros.

I would love this. I am going to purchase DiRT 2 when it is released and I hope the online community will be pretty good. I see no reason for racing games to be separated across platforms. It's seriously the same game. The only advantage PC users might have is increased resolution. That is a double edged sword because PC users might have terrible performance.

The more they do this, the more people will realize consoles are just proprietary, nonupgradable computers and think twice before buying 3 more computers (wii, xbox, ps3) in addition to their PC. It would hurt the big 3's profits, and they know it, so don't expect much of it.

Console gamers would get utterly dominated by the superior control scheme that is kb+mouse. Yes I know that was already said.

I think it would be great if cross-platform multiplayer games became popular, but I can think of a few guesses as to why it won't happen.

1. Sony and Microsoft want their online networks exclusive. Sony does not want you to be able to play someone on Microsoft's system, and vice versa. Sony/MS want you to buy the game for their system.
2. Too much coding before initial release.
3. Too much coding for every patch. Before you release a patch, you must have the same updates available for every platform, which would delay needed updates.

Dust514 is going to be an interesting experiment. A PC MMO and a console MMO connecting, but not sharing the same space. I almost want to get a console to play it when it comes out, since I'm on hiatus from EVE.

wouldn't cross gaming challenges increase sales? I mean, consoles are sales loss leaders - but software wins...

so by enabling the ecosystem, it doesn't matter which platform - as long as everyone can 'play'

I guess its in all how you look at it. I, as a pc gamer, never felt the need to compete against a console user in any game. Personally, I think the two groups fight enough as it is on message boards. LOL

Microsoft needs to go full bore with this Games for Windows Live stuff already.

All 360 games should use an intermediate byte code (using .net) so the same game runs on both PC and 360. The Xbox Live service should be integrated together, and PC/mouse and 360 gamepad should be supported in all games.

I hope this never happens. I love playing my pc games with other mature pc gamers. I've been at friend's houses while they play 360 online and it's a total different world in there. So many immature and angry retards.

apparently you don't play any PC FPS games

I agree with the above statement but I am thinking about getting a 360 eventhough at the moment a PS3 is a better value just because 90% of the folks I'd want to game with have 360's. Its a shame such simple issues can't be worked out.

Quake 3 Arena was awesome when I played it on the Dreamcast or PC. It worked really well.

I think Unreal Tournament also had cross platform plat, but was limited to 4 players on dreamcast, while Q3A could handle 8.

I think UT also let the dreamcast version fall out of date so it later became incompatible, and may have required a special server running anyway. I think there were also some DC exclusive maps that the PC versions never got. With a 4 player limit, the DC version wouldn't be able to connect to very many pc servers anyway.

This is what I want:

I want to be able to control another person as my avatar and walk around the city with "The Bad Touch" blastin' in the air to prostitute my avatar.

I'm not sure the console guys would agree with that... I've seen some gamers with multi-axis console controllers really whoop on the console...

P.S. I'm not one of those guys ;)

And basically every first person shooter in a console has some sort of auto aim feature

I don't really think there is a good reason to do this.

The only thing I reason I could come up with go cross platform would be to populate the servers and keep the game from feeling "empty". These days both the 360 and PS3 support broadband and many more people have broad band connections in their homes and there really is no need.

Console players are at a disadvantage because of the gamepad and PC hackers. When you mix the two console gamers get the worst of both world. Even in MMORPGs consoles do not get the advantage of using macros, which will certainly drive their PC friends crazy as they expect you to have loads of macros set up. All you end up doing is lowering the overall quality of the expierence without adding anything. Plenty of online console gamers these days.

Absolutely. Games would be pretty hard to play otherwise. I had to bring a friend over to my house and play FEAR 2 for him to prove that the mouse and keyboard were more accurate. Thats a big deal to me because I hate having people over. We were playing the same game on his PS3 and I mentioned how I had already beat the game at home. He wanted to know how I was able to go though it so fast and I told him that the gun fights take a lot less time on the PC because you can just pop everyone in the head as soon as you see them. Anyway we get go to my house, load the same level and I just start playing normally. Blam, blam, blam you can shoot the evil corporate mercs as quick as you can find them with your eyes.

As much as I play on the PC I really prefer the PS3, that said the damn controller is so much slower than the mouse and there is no way I would be able to play with out some sort of assist.

true - but if you didn't know you were competing against a console/PC gamer - it wouldn't matter - right? it would just propogate more people on more servers...

Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo lock the console development, so it's up to them, not the publishers.
