I'd go for King James. Be warned - have a lot of sugar and caffeine ready because it's incredibly boring and poorly put together to read as literature.

It is generally considered that the finest works in English are the Book of Common Prayer, the Authorized Version of the Bible (King James), and the Works of Shakespeare, who almost certainly worked on the translation of the Authorized Version.

Actually there are "official" version in different Churches.

I believe for Catholics, the only ones to be read in church are the New American Bible, The Douay-Rheims, and of course the Latin Vulgate.

For Anglicans, you will hear either the RSV or NRSV read aloud in church.

Jack O'Neill : Do you read the Bible, Teal'c?
Teal'c : It is a significant part of your Western culture. Have you not read the Bible, O'Neill?
Jack O'Neill : Oh, yeah. Yeah. Not all of it. Actually, I'm listening to it on tape. Don't tell me how it ends.

If you like archaic language, go for the KJV (King James Version).
If you want to read what "most people" are reading, get the NIV (New International Version).
If you want an accurate translation, get the NASB (New American Standard Bible)
If you want an easy read, get the NLT (New Living Translation)

I recommend holding off Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Leviticus until later. They tend to be boring.

Alternate between the Old and the New Testament to change pace.

Hi ,
CEV Contemporary English Version 1992 1st date of Publication

NLT New Living Translation 1996 1st date of publication

NIV New International Version 1978 1st date of complete publication

KJV King James Version 1611 1st date of publication

The main difference in these two are that CEV and NLT are the translation teams and the process used in translating the ancient texts:

The NIV is a "thought" for "thought" translation of the word flow.

16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[1] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

KJV King James Version is a literal "word" for "word" translation.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

CEV is a stylized "thought" for "thought" by different translation team than NIV

CEV
John 3
16God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die.

NLT is an "idea" or "complete thought to complete thought translation as opposed to the Living Bible which wasn't a translation at all but a parphrase of KJV to at the time modern 1960's English

NLT
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

NRSV New Revised Standard and KJV21 are Word for Word with updated 21st and 20th century English idioms included for clearer references

http://www.newlivingtranslatio...pdfs/BibleVersions.pdf

I use the NIV for daily Study and the Message by Peterson The New Living Translation would be good as well. All of these versions translate directly from ancient Greek, Latin and Hebrew versions of these texts.

They are all the same translation is different. Probably the best one is the New King James Version. It doesn't have all those thees and thou. It you want to read to learn and understand get a regular King James version and a Strong's Concordance. Remember the Bible is written in Greek and Hebrew. Many words translated in English don't mean the same thing as in greek and hebrew.

Stay away from Jehovah's witness bibles. They are changed with many parts even left out. If it has some kind of denomination stamped on it, leave it alone, especially those written for Jehovah's witness. They are a cult, plain and simple. They don't believe in salvation or that Jesus was the Christ.

where's your proof of that? Jehovah's Witnesses have translated the original Hebrew and Greek Scriptures. they have not left any parts out... that is what KJV does by not referring to God by his real name. KJV is used as a denominational Bible more than any other (explains why religions nowadays partake in the worship of the cross, the celebration of pagan holidays like X-mas and Easter, and mixing with politics and government--- all sins against God!). JW's are not a cult. A cult follows an individual leader, whereas JW's serve the one true God by following the example of his son, Jesus Christ. JW's do believe in salvation, by means of doing God's will (see Matthew 24:14 and Matthew 28:19,20 in ANY Bible), and they believe that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah), the only perfect man and the only begotten son of God. (not a trinity, another pagan belief held incorrectly by a slew of modern-day religions).

If you want an "official" Bible filled with the lies of today's political and cash greedy-driven sinful world, yeah, go get the KJV... but....

if you want the real truth to be told....

you'll know better....

you want more?

"(NLT) Version information

The goal of any Bible translation is to convey the meaning of the ancient Hebrew and Greek texts as accurately as possible to the modern reader. The New Living Translation is based on the most recent scholarship in the theory of translation. The challenge for the translators was to create a text that would make the same impact in the life of modern readers that the original text had for the original readers. In the New Living Translation, this is accomplished by translating entire thoughts (rather than just words) into natural, everyday English. The end result is a translation that is easy to read and understand and that accurately communicates the meaning of the original text."

Also, I hear that the NEV (New English Version) is very good, but I have not seen it (it's a very recent translation--newer than NLV)

For fun, ck out " Rappin' With Jesus: The Gospel According to the Four Brothers" pic

I second the NLT.

I third the NLT.

well I vote for rappin with jesus  i swear to god he busts the tightist flows

Wow, I want to know more. I was always torn by people telling me different things about Jehovah's witnesses. I was raised baptist but I personally believe the Jehovah's witness version more.

I plead with you to stay away from the Jehovah's Witnesses.
Jesus made many claims that He is God.
He and God are One.
Jesus was not a created being.
Same goes for the Holy Spirit.
All three existed all the time as one Person.
This is where faith comes into play, because it is mind-boggling.

This what JWs believe

Does not accept the Triune God revelation of the Scripture.

Believes God is a solitary person with a personal name, Jehovah, who is the Father.

Believes Jesus Christ to be the preincarnate archangel Michael and is a god not equal to Jehovah.

Teaches the third Person of the Triune Being as holy spirit and is a force.

Believes Jesus Christ did not resurrect physically but rather was resurrected as glorious spirit creature and his body dissolved into gaseous form.

Beliefs about Salvation:

Believes there are two classes of Christians:
The anointed class composed of 144,000 who will go to heaven as spirits sons of God. The door was close to for this class since 1935. Only this class are the ones who are born again.
The great crowd who will be resurrected on earth and will have the chance to live in new heaven and new earth after the great Armageddon.

Believes there are four requirements for salvation:
Jesus Christ must be identified.
Taking in knowledge of Gods purposes regarding the earth and Christs role as earths new king. In other words, to obey Gods law.
Associated with Gods channel, His theocratic organization.
To support His government while loyally advocating His kingdom rule to others.

Denies the reality of hell but instead teaches soul sleep and the annihilation of the wicked.

Come out of the cult my friend.
