Got some Yellow Tail Merlot and Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon on sale for $6 each. Can't find my cork screw though so I guess I can wait until I have a lady friend over. :)

So far I've tried monkey bay sauvignon blanc, flying fish riesling and today I bought a bottle of chateau ste michelle chardonnay. I'm just trying out all the cheap ones first (white wine). I really like the latter but still need to try some others.

Btw I visited bluemont winery near leesburg, va and their peach wine was delicious. What's a good peach tasting wine?

OP, where do you live?

My favorite value wine is probably from Ravenswood. Vintner's Blend series are absolutely awesome, and I can always find them at Safeway (CA) for about $6.99 a bottle. sometimes on sale for $5.99. The 06, 07 Shiraz is my favorite.

and it can easily outclass plenty of $20 bottles.

And don't believe what people tell you, there is tons upon tons of value and greatness in the wine world for ~$10 a bottle.

originally posted an Aussie blend, but here's a link to their CA petite Syrah (had no idea that Ravenswood had Aussie ownership? They are in Sonoma)

http://gabesview.com/2008/11/24/ravenswood-2006-vintners-blend-petite-sirah/

I'm guessing Shiraz = Aussie; Sirah/Syrah = CA. (same damn grape, just a regional difference in naming. Shiraz is the original, "true" name, btw. the varietal originates in Shiraz, Iran)

Visited the winery a couple years ago. Ravenswood buys grapes from all over. Agreed that the Vintner's Blends are great value wines, easy to find too.

LOL $10 bottle of wine is like watered down camp stove fuel!

I get a few nice bottles from the wine club through the year, but I'd be broke if that's all I drank.

The last time Bevmo had their 5 cent sale, I stocked up on Cosentino at $8 a bottle. I picked up a couple of The Zin at the sale before that, but I haven't seen it that cheap since.

Good keep-on-hand wines, all available at your local grocery store for $5-15.

- Sweet whites, great introduction for someone who isn't sure they like wine
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling
Fetzer Gewurztraminer

- Drier whites, good for someone who knows they like whites
Clos Du Bois Chardonnay
Kendall-Jackson Sauvignon Blanc
Columbia Winery Pinot Grigio

- Good solid reds for sipping or dinner:
Blackstone Cabernet
Covey Run Syrah
Dry Creek Zinfandel
Hogue Cellars Merlot

- Slightly off the beaten track reds (still cheap, vaguely flashy for someone unfamiliar with wine):
Bogle Petit Sirah
Goats Do Roam Red Blend

[edit]
I deliberately stayed with major brands to ensure they'd be easy to find and low-cost wines to make sure we're not breaking your budget. If anyone wants to get into a connoisseur pissing contest I'll go dig out my cellar list and we can go at it in PM.

Adding to those, Chateau St Jean makes a great fume blanc in the $10 range.

Also like Old Vine zin from Ravenswood, nice step up from their Vintner's Blends.

Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon went over well with my date Tuesday night. She also brought some Blackstone Winemaker's Select Pinot Noir which wasn't bad... a lot more sweet compared to the Cabernet, though.

I recommended Blackstone originally; if she and I have similar tastes then check out some of the other stuff on my list. ;)
