So a couple times now I've had a female friend over that ended up drinking water because she didn't like my selection of drinks.

And you have a decent liquor cabinet? Tell her to bring her own fucking liquor if she's that picky.

Some of you REALLY need to get out more. ;)

Chilean wines are mostly $10-$20 a bottle and are almost ALL fantastic. Alamos Malbec comes to mind, as well as my current favorite, Echeverria Camenere, which i got for $11 yesterday at freshmarket. It received a 90 in wine advocate. Trapiche Broquel is another one, i think it runs ~$18/ bottle. I have actually yet to find an argentinian or chilean malbec i didn't like.

That said...my girlfriend likes reds...but it seems a lot of women don't. YMMV :D

Honestly, just go to the liquor store and pick out a selection of different kinds of wine around the $15 price range. More often than not they will be decent wines.

Get two bottles each of: Cab, Merlot, Zin, Sirah/Shiraz.

Get a bottle or two of blush, and then get a couple bottles of white. White is good because you can just keep it in the fridge and it wont really go bad. Red will go bad after a couple days if not pumped, and a week or two if pumped.

Toasted Head and Ravenswood are two brands of red wine I like. Beyond those, I usually just randomly pick out bottles of small vineyard wine and make notes as to whether I like them or not so I know to get them in the future. I like just trying random new wines. I would say at least 80% of them are decent at the $15 price range.

If anyone wants to get into a connoisseur pissing contest I'll go dig out my cellar list and we can go at it in PM.

lol how long is your list? just curious :p - my dad is a wine enthusiast and has a list of all the wines he's tried (including name, type of grape, region of origin, date of MFR, etc.) and a little book to write down descriptions for the wines, hehe.

Honestly when you pass that $12/bottle mark most everything is good (or at least decent). On the cheap, I like Yellowtails' Cabernet Sauvignon which can usually be had for $6/bottle.

Get Little Black Dress, it's fairly new and huge among females right now (and i myself enjoy the pinot noir quite a bit)

A Riesling may be good as it tends to be a bit sweeter and fruitier. The Spaetlese is a later harvest. The riper grapes make it sweeter than the Kabinett but it runs more expensive. I prefer the Mosel Rieslings. Joh. Jos. Christoffel is one that I really liked and I used to be able to get them for a little less than $20 USD in the States. The only Riesling that I have found in Hong Kong that can match it for me costs around $30 USD. The J. J. Christoffel, probably a Kabinett, was not too sweet while remaining fruity and effervescent. Most Rieslings I find to be too sweet, or occasionally, too dry. Hard to find a good balance but I think they are a good wine for those that dislike the taste of alcohol.

The wife and I found that we generally preferred the cheaper red wines more than most of the more expensive ones we tried.

We're not wine drinkers though.

Cheaper wines tend to be sweeter; that's why folks who don't drink a lot of wine, or just have other things to do than be an oenophile, like 'em.

We only have about six cases in the cellar right now. :) I keep a wine journal too! We go tasting a lot; it's our favorite vacation. Unfortunately I don't know much about wine outside of California or Washington at this point since those are the areas that have been available for me to taste in. I'd like to travel and learn more about other regions someday.

I agree with Fetzer but, and seriously not trying to be a snob here, most of the other wines are better for cooking than drinking. Just tend to be overly sweet and with not a lot of other character. You can spend the same money on something that is a step up from Sutter Home.

I probably drink more Chilean and Argentinian wines these days than any other.
