iCloud will be announced @ WWDC

It's officially official, Apple's iCloud will be announced @ WWDC. And Jobs will be there too, despite his medical leave/retirement.

Unusual for Apple to pre announce like this, wonder if there's anything else they have up their sleeve...

CUPERTINO, California—May 31, 2011—Apple® CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software - Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®; and iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.
WWDC will feature more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers. Mac® developers will see and learn how to develop world-class Mac OS X Lion applications using its latest technologies and capabilities. Mobile developers will be able to explore the latest innovations and capabilities of iOS and learn how to greatly enhance the functionality, performance and design of their apps. All developers can bring their code to the labs and work with Apple engineers.

That is a semicolon between iPod Touch and iCloud, indicating that they are not lumping it in with the iOS powered devices.

It would be interested to see what features will be accessible on other computer (ie could you do the cloud music on any computer).

My guess is this is how it's going down.

- Big iCloud announcement stating that it's replacing MobileMe and it's offering a bunch of additions as well. (No music sync yet, saving that for Sept).
- Then they get to OS X Lion and how iCloud will sync up things more seamlessly (Mail, Calendars, App data, etc... maybe even iOS data too).
- Then iOS 5 which will showcase all the evolutions they've made and how iCloud will add so many cool things to iOS 5.

I'm betting iOS 5/iCloud will ship at the end of July/early August, and OS X Lion will be close behind it.

So what does everyone think it's going to be? Or what kind of integration with OS X?

What I'm hoping for:

1) Dropbox-esque syncing of files/folders.
2) Full syncing of application preferences (which iOS tie-ins for apps like TextExpander, 1Password, etc...)
3) Sync of game saves across iOS and OS X (a la SteamPlay).
4) Access to music/video files in iPod apps over 3G (with bitrate conversion for when I'm on EDGE).

If iCloud comes out with only #2 & 3, I'll be happy... but adding in #1 & 4 would be something I'd easily pay money for.

OS X already supports software JBOD RAID

Right, RAID 5 gives parity and integrity right? But doesn't it require at least 3 hard drives to work? The only Mac they sell with 3 drives is the Mac Pro.

Yes and yes.

There is a Mac Pro RAID card, but it's like $500 on ebay, and I'm using a hackintosh. I can go with a rocketraid card, but that's over $100 and is 4 ports.

I have a mobo with the ICH10 southbridge which doesn't do RAID5. ICH10R does RAID5. FML.

Basically, I've got a Q6600/EP45-DS3L hackintosh that I'm setting up as a fileserver. I have 6 SATA connections on the board and want 5x1.5TB for RAID5 and my 60GB SSD. Seeing as how my old mobo doesn't do RAID5, and I don't really want to spend $100 to get it, a new mobo or RAID card is out.

My cheapest option is to run linux with software RAID5, and then virtualize OSX on top. It'd be nicer if it was just OSX though.

I suppose I could JBOD, but 5 disks in JBOD... I dunno.

Apparently software RAID5 was around in OS9 but disappeared in X.

Am I the only one incredibly annoyed with how theyve overlapping with the start of e3, particularly MS's press conference?

I'm sure its 100% intentional, but man its such a dick move for the many people who are fans of both xbox and apple.
