This particular study cites a number of others regarding the overall threat/fear response associated with conservatism.I seem to recall a study at one point that linked those that self identified as conservative/republican with a measurable difference in the fear functions of the brain.
But yes, the whole recent crumbling of their gun support does point out that they're just terrified of everything. They don't actually believe in the 2A, they just need it to feel tough/safe.
