Well if IBM is more expensive, it must be better right?

Actually, contrary to popular belief, there is nothing wrong with Maxtor, just because it's a little less expensive. They get the job done. I defy anyone to put them both in identical systems and notice the difference.

Maxtor has the best RMA/Warranty program out there period. 3 year OEM,Retail it doesnt matter to them, they replace these drives basically no questions asked, except to run the Diagnostic programs.

More expensive doesnt always equal better.

Bignate603:

Maxtor's 3yr warranty is possibly the best in the business. IBM doesnt cover OEM drives, Maxtor covers all drives with no questions asked.

Myself, I only use IBM drives and have never had problem with any of them. Yes they cost more. Is it worth it???? To be honest, I'm not sure.

My choice would be IBM first & Maxtor very close in second place, these are probably my favourite top two HD brands.

Yea, I eat at MacDonald's! What of it?! Out of the 8 or 10 drives I've had, all Western Digitals, I've only had one go bad (I was doing something I shouldn't have, but it DID die), and one I never have found out whether it was my fault or not. Performance wise, I don't know, since I haven't used anything else.

Anyone have comparisions to the WD's, since I'm fixin' to upgrade again...?

I read it, but I got an implication that Maxtor is still not as good because it cost less.

Shu8:

Maxtor is just as quite.

Just ordered an IBM 75GXP 45GB. I've looked at a lot of brands and IBM comes out on top 11 times out of 10. ;)

<<anyone got experience to share?>>

Yep. I have 5 Maxtor drives, all performing brilliantly. IMO they're one of the best in reliability and overall value, but some people had their share of bad experience with Maxtors in the past. However many people would agree that Maxtor make some nice and reliable hard drives.

Im hopeing that Maxtor will release a 10k RMP ide drive soon (or at least someone will...). Also, since they did purchase Quantums HDD unit maybe they can actually release a good SCSI drive (i wonder if they are going to keep the quantum name and release a new atlas 10k... hrmm...)

Personally I think that maxtor and IBM are about equal in most cases... I may be a bit biased to maxtor though as those are the drives I own.. :)

WOW!I leave this forum for 24 hours and this is what happens... It grew and grew! Cool! And it is moving onto another subject. Quantum and Maxtor... Well I don't know any of this Quantum and Maxtor business but I do know that IBMs are still undefeated!!! But Maxtor is still a good company still!

SKY.

chuckieland:

The Quantum HDD corp entirely merged with Maxtor, IDE and SCSI divisions are both under HDD. Only their tape storage corp was not part of the deal.

I have several 7200 RPM Maxtor drives and love them. One bonus you get with Maxtor is the MaxBlast utility. If you are upgrading from another drive MaxBlast does a GREAT job of setting up the drive and moving your data to the new drive.

IBM and Maxtor are both fine ...

I just avoid WD because of their terrible reputation ... and I am not a big fan of Quantum because i have had problems with their drives in the past ... probably stupid on my behalf since the problems were over 4 years ago ... and i know they are making better drives now ...

but if you want the best in quality ... Seagate is the way to go ... however i dont see whats wrong with Maxtor ... since you can just RMA if drive dies
