the general consensus is that IBM 75gxp is the highest performing IDE drive on the market. Take that for what its worth. I have a maxtor and im happy w/ it... although I have never had a ibm drive myself i do have friends w/ them and they are very fast also. If all you care for is performance then go IBM, if not give the maxtor a look.

I also have a 10.2 Gig Maxtor and they are OK but i stuck that into one of my slower machines, but it is still a good hard drive but for my fast system I use the IBM and that is speedy! Never looked back!

Maxtor and Western Digital are the McDonalds and Burger King of hard drives. Sure, they sell a lot of burgers, but that doesn't mean they're good. They're cheap and they get the job done.

I have a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45 (equivalent of 75GXP) and the only drives I've seen reach this high in HD Tach (35MB/sec...and no I'm not talking about burst rate, but sustained transfers) are SCSI drives. The drive is also exceptionally quiet (even with the acoustic protection thing turned off). I think the Maxtor and IBM are about the same speed, give or take a few hundred KB/sec...I think you'll be happy either way. I also had no problems running this Maxtor on 41MHz PCI bus.

oh boy oh boy, this thread again hehehe...

Personally, I'm a huge Maxtor fan. 7 out of the 11 or so drives I have are Maxtors. I have one dead Western Digital, one dead Maxtor and a Quantum with bad sectors. The two dead drives were from a few years back when Maxtor still had some problems with their drives. Recently however, their drives kick butt! You can't beat them for the price/performance ratio.

And even though I'm a hardcore Maxtor fan, I do own an IBM drive, and I am impressed. But they are more expensive than the Maxtors... so I'd opt for the Maxtor's anyday!

LOL Office Boy, I would say that IBM are more the restaurant types, like higher class, all about quality type of thing. They get the job done, but in style, if you get what I mean. I wouln't say that Maxtor and Western were like fast food restaurants but interesting concept, they are cheap and cheerful and do get the job done, which is the whole aim of a hard drive, so if you want quality and speed go IBM if not then go for Maxtor.

The choice is yours...

That made me sound like one of those family game show hosts... :p

Kami-

I have seen a ibm75gxp get ~36-37 MB/s in HDTach. My maxtor gets ~21mb/s :( but it is rather old... Also, IBM drives have a quoted 7.5ms seek time... thats pretty fast of a 7200rpm ide drive... not sure what the seek times on the maxtors are but i could swear they are around 8-8.5ms.

anyway though, both are good drives and would be a good choice... my opinion though is to stay away from WD... I had two WD drives go out on my last week... just my experiences though.

I seems to me that this is much like anything else, If the $30 is no big deal, and you want the performance then get an IBM, If your a little tight (or like me, just a cheap ass) get the maxtor. Some guy's spend everything for that last littel bit of performance (if you own an ultra you know what i'm talking about), some guys are like me, computers are a hobby and a job, but I got other stuff for my money to do too (I have an MX)

Actually there is a thread in hotdeals right now that tells you how to get a 40GB Quantum ATA/100 7200 rpm drive for $104 after rebate.
Thread here

Im a Maxtor fan, I recommend Maxtor hard drives, but I think you still should get IBM so you dont piss all these IBM zealots off.

<<One thing to remember- the WD 7200 rpm HD were IBM licenced....>>

People, its been a year since WD and IBM terminated their alliance.

ragiepew:

Yea... to be honest Im not afraid of any of these IBM zealots, I know well enough Maxtor makes hard drives comparable to IBMs. My point was to just elminate uncessary wars.

LXi- Thats what I was hinting at... Too many zealots on this board w/ a closed mind... (whether it be for IBM, 3dfx, nvidia, klipsch, amd, intel, etc...) Some just need to open their mind and realize there is more to life than their favorite hardware manufacturere. Also, people need to lighten up when someone else recommends another brand (ex: Maxtor)... they are just opinions guys... everyone is entitled to them.
