IBM 60GB Deskstar $99.00 @ Accesmicro.

What a "Hot Deal".
IBM seems to be giving everyone a "Hot" Deal with these drives.
Or at least a "Hot" time.
The price will probably get even better since the "shi*'s hittin' the fan".
😀
Of course I shouldn't smile,
I've got one of them.🙁

<< This one OVERHEATS!! IBM suggests you use it no more than 8 hours a day so it won't get too hot! Unbelievable. >>

ibm has been on the hot seat lately over low lifetime running hours. they suggest no more than 8 hours a day.

dew.

you gotta be kiddin me.. :|

No lie, I've been reading alot about these since I became infatuated with glass platters. They are recommended for like 333 hours a month or some other such nonsense. My old Maxtor 60 gets HOT but its been going for like 2 years now, straight...

Not true. check out this link for more information:

ibm drives are terrible, breaks down in less then 6 months
maxtor bought quantum, another terrible hd quality. i'd stay away from both

i've been running one of these bad boys 24x7 for the last 2 months with no problems. picked it up from dell when that deal was going on

Ummm yeah overheats..riiiiggghhhttt..I have this drive running 24hrs a day for the past 6 months...no bad sectors no problems what so ever without a cooler. Nice drive, don't be fooled.

I started out with a 75GXP. For the first year and a half, I would wake up, turn on my computer, use it all day, and shut it down when I went to bed. I was skeptical about the alleged problems for that period of time as well. Recently I've been running it 24x7. It took under a month for the drive to fail. It was replaced by another 75GXP which took no more than 4 days to fail. I finally replaced it with a WD and I'm quite happy with the results. My suggestion is if you've got anything terribly important sitting on an IBM drive, you buy another drive immediately and back up onto it and definitely don't buy and IBM hard disks for a while.

Can't believe this issue still comes up everytime someone mentions an IBM drive. It's true that IBM drives do have a higher fail rate, but as long as you give them proper ventilation the results return to normal (no hard drives right next to it cramping it like you can with Maxtor/WD drives). If you plan on running RAID, stay away from IBM. But if you are only going to use a single drive and it has room to breathe, in my experience they've been fine.

I have a 30 GB 75GXP that's been running in my girlfriend's computer (previously mine) for almost 2 years now and a 40 GB 60GXP which has been running fine for about 6 months now.

In my computer I use a single 80 Gig WD drive, never had the need for RAID or multiple hard drives.

exaclty what i'm saying, those who haven't seen this drive fail yet, will see it sooner than later. yeah eventually all drives will fail but the ibm ones seem to fail much much sooner.

I'm curious what the size of this drive was. As I stated in my post, both of my IBM drives have two platters (15x2,20x2) and they've been fine. Most of the problems I've heard with the IBM drives started out at the 45 Gig and up with the 75GXPs.

Get Maxtor instead of these. Newegg has them for $99 and sleep well without thinking that your server will crapp out ...

Both of my IBM drives were 45GB which seems to back up what you said. I'm curious if anybody's 30GB has failed yet.

I'm sure there's been a few, I'm definitely no expert, just my experience. Considering my parent's and girlfriend's primary drives are both IBM, I'm gonna get hell if they fail. 😛

It's hard to believe that IBM is letting this continue. I haven't heard much on the new 120GXP drives, but since the tech seems the same I doubt the problem has been resolved.

My 30gb 75GXP developed bad sectors a few months after I got it. I elected to do a low level format instead of RMA'ing it and it's been fine since (I did get a hard drive cooling kit though).

Neweg has the 120GXP for $108 shipped. Newest IBM technology. The one with the 4 atom thick chemical spray that's supposed to be the next greatest IBM thing or something.
Oh, ata133 too.
