Wow doesn't everyone just love how fast a legitimate thread about IBM products
quickly degenerates into IBM bashing? And it only took one reply to start this
thread on its way downhill!

Now if you ask me, I'd buy another IBM drive. Been very happy with my 75GXP
drive for the past year. Can't wait to see how these 120GXP's do.

Well I bought one of these and it arrived today. After about an hour's worth of use I started hearing some strange catscratching noises from inside the unit. I ran the new drive fitness test and it said the drive was bad and to RMA it ASAP.

...

Just kidding! :D

JellyBaby ok well please let us know when your new IBM 120 gxp series HD dies please or starts to have problems ok ? I want to be the first to know! Don't be crying to me btw if you lose a lot of important data or go without a computer for 1 to 2 weeks.

imtim83, I don't have one but might in the future who knows?.

Right now I have two 75GXPs, one which has been running great but the other has problems. The 60GXPs appear to be better and I suspect the 120GXPs will be back to "normal" reliability. IBM is not that inept or uncaring. But once bitten twice shy so I'll wait on word of the new 120GXPs before making a move.

btw, I never cry over failed drives because I try to make regular backups!

<< why the hell don't review sites zoom in on the freaking burst readings, fricken retards >>

Because it's the sustained data transfer rate that matters in real world performance, you retard.

<< Hey, everyone has a skeleton or two in their closet.

Western Digital had the infamous "Cadaver" line(whose problems were shared by Quantum).
Seagate had the Medalist Pro.
IBM had the 75GXP.
Maxtor had pretty much everything prior the DiamondMax 40.

If you let one failure steer you away forever you'll never buy anything.

Smartest thing I've heard so far in this thread(well the "Which HD sucks the most" part anyways.
The 60GXP's have been far more reliable than the 75GXP's, and considdering IBM knows perfectly well what the problem was, they're unlikely to make the same mistake again, two generations later.

I just hope you are are right about the IBM 120 gxp series. If not then IBM needs to do something. Oh yeah did yall see the maxium hours IBM said the HD should run btw? Its lower than other HDs i know.

IBM is not that inept or uncaring.

I dunno. I think they could have handled the situation far better. A recall and a little extra goodie for the trouble would have been expensive, but IBM could have afforded that easily and would have bought a big chunk of brand loyality at the same time.

I'm amazed that big corporations still handle these kind of problems so badly (see Mercedes A-Class for a worst case scenario ;) ). In comparison, Intel's FDIV recall was certainly expensive but I think in the long run it did their brand image nothing but good.

BTW, I'm keeping a few flawed P75 to commemorate the event. Perhaps I'll send one in for the tenth anniversary of the bug ;).

I still have a flawed P90, too. You think in a few years they'll honor our requests for a bug-free chip? :)

Maybe they'll send you a Pentium 5 90GHz back, being all out of big free P90's ;)

Well, quite a few people who had to RMA their 45GB 75GXP's got a faster, larger brand new 60GB 60GXP in replacement, albeit a lame RMA process. Sounds like they got "a goodie" to me....15GB more space and a brand new faster drive instead of a refurbished model of the same drive returned...:)

Okay, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Don't make blanket statement like IBM sucks, WD sucks, Maxtor sucks etc.. Its stupid and pointless. Every company has bad products. Today's winner will be tomorrow's dog. Example:

IBM 34GXP = Great
IBM 75GXP = Problematic
Seagate Barracuda IV = Great
Seagate Metalist = Problematic
WD Caviar (around 1.6GB - 8.4GB) = Very Problematic
WD BB series = Pretty good so far.
Quantum Bigfoot = Laughing stock of the storage industry
Quantum Fireball (recent) = Good

Is the 120GXP "bad" or is it a "winner?" Who knows. Only time will tell.

Insane3D yeah but a lot of people got the same HD back which was not even knew. It was a used one.
Now that sucks. I would be very angry. Some got maybe a IBM 60 gxp series HD back but then it failed on them too. I sure hope IBM has the 120 GXP series fixed for their sack. But we will not know intill 6 to 12 months anyway so by the time that happens a new ibm HD should be out. But i would wait a while till getting a new 120 gxp series because they are so expersive and we have no idea how stable they are.
IBM even gave the HDs a spec. amount of usage hours it should run only. It is no where near the number of hours of having your HD on 24/7. It is a lot less. I know its shorter than other HD brands that say the time the HDs should run.

Heh, I don't have the link right now, but there's still a page up somewhere at intel.com that says it's a lifetime "warranty" WRT to the FDIV bug. Let's see in 2004 ;). P5 90 GHz would be no problem of course, as long as it's got 3,3Vcore and works in my Intel "Plato" board ;).

Well, quite a few people who had to RMA their 45GB 75GXP's got a faster, larger brand new 60GB 60GXP in replacement, albeit a lame RMA process. Sounds like they got "a goodie" to me....15GB more space and a brand new faster drive instead of a refurbished model of the same drive returned...

Yeah, agreed. But far from everybody got that deal and IBM kept totally quite about it.

Why don?t you just wait to get the WD1200JB SE? 8mb buffer sounds like fun to me.

I think I?m going to get the WD1000JB SE a little smaller at 100GB but still quick with the 8mb buffer @ 7200

I was reading some of the comments in SR's forums. What a @#&*^ mess that is! No, not the software, but all those charged emotions from some of the participants. It's a horrible crash and burn situation and it's very disturbing to realize SR will soon be no more.

Well i know what happen at storagereview was not the end of the world. Plus it is ok it happens because i always lose stuff too. Its not that hard to do. I am not mad at anyone and no one else should be either.
I still love SR no matter if the old fourm is there or not. I still have all of the fourm in my head forever. Well some of it. I really do appreicate those nice reviews of HDs SR does and the time they give up just to do the site for everyone. It is not a easy job i know. So i really do not care who lost the forum or whatever because that does not matter. I will not treat someone who lost just a fourm bad. Thats not right because he did not mean to lose it. We all lose things that we do not mean too so its just a matter of life. But i really thank SR for such a great site.
