Just look over HERE

Only the 80 GB and 120 GB models are available though :( ... I was hoping for the 40 GB model too.

Anyways, here's a link to a REVIEW. Hmmm.... makes me think if I should change the order I'm making today from Maxtor to IBM....

Well if we look at the trend:

- 75 GXP series - loads of problems, RMA's galore
- 60 GXP series - some problems, occasional RMA
- 120 GXP series - Almost problem-free? Nearly no RMA's?

;) :D

Heh, if you analyse that trend (i.e. lesser GXP number=fewer problems) it would mean that the 120GXP will have 60% more RMAs than the 75GXP ;).

[just in case: this was not serious :)]

LMAO, you have a point... I think we need a complete analysis of trends regarding IBM's GXP series... my guess is that it would look like a bell curve since the pre-75GXP-series drives didn't seem to have many problems...

Hope those 120GXP's are more reliable than 60GXP's and 75GXP's. I just got Seagate Barracuda IV for exchange to my dead 60GXP, I hope that seagate lasts more than 2 month...

No way i am buying a IBM. I refuse to wait a week or more to get a new HD. Where Maxtor only takes 1 to 2 days to get a new HD.

They need to lower their prices to get us buying them again. When you have as bad a rep as they do right now, I don't understand how you can demand a higher price than competitors. We've been able to get get both 100GB abd 120GB Western Digital's for well under $200 with and without rebates. I won't be paying a premium for a non-reliable drive.

I'll stick with my WD1000BB-JB, my 75GXP failed to spin-up a few times yesterday.

Maxtor. The best and fastest retail rate of any HD brand! IBM one week + just to get a new HD. Maxtor only 1 to 2 days. :)

I agree with Jen all the way on this one...

I have the same 46.1 75 gxp drive and have had NO problems at all.

I can't say that about all the WD drives I've had....

Just my 2cents...

ok guys well tell me than who makes the best most reliable hard drives I've used only IBM and maxtor I've seen dead maxtors before but I have never had a dead IBM dive I just got done ordering 3 10000 rpm IBM SCSI to rebuild a clients file server and hopefully these drives well perform without giving us any problems

I've got a 61.4GB 75GXP still going strong. Did have to do a quasi-LLF once, but that was because I pushed the FSB a little too high :D

That said, IBM's return policy is terrible. I'd stick to Maxtor, they have the best return policy in the industry.

But 2002 is the year of Serial ATA so why even buy them?

Hard drives are the slowest components in systems. No matter how fast they get, until someone reinvents mass storage technology, it won't matter if you have a 60GXP or 120GXP. Besides there is probably not much difference between the two.

What kinda company is IBM. Charges so much for POS drives. I wonder how the failure rate will be. They really need to work on their rep.

That explains why your IBM has been so problem free. Put it through it's paces every day for a while and see if you can say the same for it in a couple of months. I'm not saying it will definitely fail but the statistics are definitely on my side.

that could be true as well..........but this drive was originally put in my room mates computer prior to being put in the server. i only recently put it in the server as the two WD drives i had there both failed. SMART Drive failure.............and both of them was only used as backup nothing stressfull.

Lovely...typical of IBM to include only a two megabyte buffer.

Only ide drive I know of right now with more than 2Meg cache is the WD with 8Megs.
Of course there is SCSI, but that's a whole other ballpark.

Well considering that there is exactly one ATA drive on the market that has anything else I don't think it's an issue. Let's face it, IBM will sell 120GXPs as fast as they can make them. I mean, it took someone(Maxtor) 20 months to release a drive that equalled the 75GXP in terms of performance.

So who is being a beta tester and getting a IBM 120 GXP series HD? I will wish you a lot of luck with not losing your 80 or 120 gigs. Just more to lose off a IBM HD!

Hey, everyone has a skeleton or two in their closet.

Western Digital had the infamous "Cadaver" line(whose problems were shared by Quantum).
Seagate had the Medalist Pro.
IBM had the 75GXP.
Maxtor had pretty much everything prior the DiamondMax 40.

If you let one failure steer you away forever you'll never buy anything.
