I dont get all the hype surrounding Michelle Kwan. Why is she the favorite all the time? I just saw a headline of "KWAN GETS BRONZE, hughes gets gold. Is it just me or is there something wrong with that?

I have never heard of Hughes, she must be a better skater than Kwan. I just think its sad that Miss Hughes won a gold medal at the olympics but some of its luster is taken away by headlines like i just posted.

I say get over it Kwan isnt as good as people think. She got a silver in Nagano and a bronze in Salt Lake. she isnt gold medal material.

She's young and attractive which means marketing and money. That's the basic explanation.

Kwan:
4 time world champion
6 time us national champion
silver medalist at nagano

this is why she is always the favorite.

Plus the fact that she's won pretty much every other title in the world but has never won an Olympic Gold. While I would've liked to see her win the gold medal, I agree with Citrix that while she is an excellent skater, she's not really a gold winner. I think it comes down to mental state. Sarah was very relaxed when she skated and Michelle seemed very tense.

You could just tell that Kwan had a sour attitude. She was 'expecting' to win the gold. I'm glad she didn't. She would have been too proud. As far as skating, Hughes didn't expect to win, she was ranked lower on the US team. But she skated a 'near' flawless 4 minutes which was the best of those four skaters. It was so cool to see how happy she was when she won. She was a good winner. Kwan was just a sore loser. She didn't celebrate Hughes victory, she just hid out in that little room....

She's kind of like the Phil Mickelson of skating (best young player to never win a major) except I like Phil Mickelson and don't really care too much one way or the other about Michelle Kwan. I realize the World Championships could probalby be considered a major, but most people always think in terms of the olympics as THE place to win.

And I DO think it's wrong though if the headlines are that Michelle DIDN'T get the gold instead of Hughes GETS the gold. That's the way the media works though. They think we're too stupid to appreciate anything other than household names.

Kwan reminds me of Celine Dion from SNL....

"I am the best skater in the world." That's her attitude

Maybe Celine Dion should write a song for M. Kwan called

"My Skates Will Go On!"

I'm glad she didn't win. She sounded like a stuck up bitch when they interviewed her. She said that she "expected" to get the gold. STFU you whiny little twit, be glad you got a medal at all you ungrateful little runt!:|

I think it's been proven over and over during these games that the media is biased towards Americans, especially the popular ones, the well-known names on the American Olympic team. I was actually surprised last night when NBC showed the full performances of all of the skaters in the last couple of flights during the broadcast instead of skipping past the non-Americans and showing some lame-ass segment about how hard Kwan had trained and her coach situation and blah blah blah....they did just that with the short program. And have you noticed that when there's an American on the medal stand the camers zooms in on them the whole medals ceremony instead of showing the gold medalist? Even worse, when those two women won gold and bronze in the speed skating thing they announced both their names and never even mentioned the silver medalist....during te medals ceremony they zoomed in on the two of them the whole time, avoiding the other woman.....it just makes me mad they can't report the Olympics without telling us how great the Americans are, even of they totally suck compared to the people who are winning.

woah, rambling a bit there, sorry :)

The headline are raving about Kwan because a lot of people were speculating if she was going to get gold because:

- She's been a favorite for very long
- She fired her coach recently
- She is the more experienced skater between Sarah Hughes and Sasha Cohen

Just to throw the ball the other way, CBC(The canadian channel) shows overwelming bias to Canadian teams. This is expected. I do not want to see the Uzbekistani ice dancing team if american hockey is on.

Back to Kwan. Do you think she is more upset because she lost the gold medal, or the endorsments that come with it?

it was funny how biased it was. if you watche dthe whole thing, which well i happened to because someone convinced me, well you saw how all those other countries skated first. and then, they played that short video with the music before the final group, like it was the real show now. i dunno that was just kinda funny

I'm glad Kwan didn't get the gold.
1) Kwan always skates the same program. This is the same program she has done since well before the last olymipcs. The other skaters are original and invent their own moves/entire program. Thus Kwan is so boring to watch.
2) Kwan only does the easy moves. There are many types of jumps, and Kwan does the easiest one for the vast majority of her jumps. Everyone agrees that Kwans program was the easiest of the medal contenders.
3) This shouldn't matter, but I think a poll would show that Kwan is far from the prettiest skater. I only brought this up since others mentioned it.
4) Figure skating is biased. Your past performances count in the judges minds. Suppose skater A is world known, skates an easy program, and makes mistakes. Then suppose skater B is unknown, skates a tough program, and makes no mistakes. You'd think skater B would win everytime. But that isn't how skating works. Going over history, usually skater A has won in that situation. Huges only could win if Slutskya (sp?) beat Kwan... I'm not even going to mention the possiblity of bribed judges.

I think skating would be much better if they AVERAGED the judges scores. But no, they can't do simple math like that...

Skater C: 5.0, 5.0, 5.2, 5.5, 5.6. Average: 5.26.
Skater D: 4.5,4.2, 5.3, 5.6, 5.7. Average: 5.06.

Who wins under the current rules? Skater D.

The American media is biased toward the American athletes?:Q
I agree that there should be some objectivity in the reporting but the average viewer evidently likes the bleeding heart pro american stories. You have to realize that the Olympic coverage isn't directed at the sports fans, it's directed at the folks who don't normally watch sports. Sad but true.

Uh...how about you restate that to: "I think it's been proven over and over during these games that the American media is biased towards Americans"

Check out other country's news pages on the web...they couldn't care less how the Americans are doing

[edit] Here's how much bias there is on BBC
