hiiii friends...
I hav somehow arranged for more money and can opt for an i5(with a 70-75$ mobo)...but the problem is...is i5 worth spending the extra(way extra) bucks compared to amd fx 6100 or phenom 2 1075t both of which are 6core...would it be a close competition or far away one...

and yeah i am eyeing an i5 2500 or an i5 3450....which to go for among them!!!plz help guys

Wait for a i5.

Its funny that i was in a similar position to your about 2 months back,i did a forum thread and everything.

In the end i bought the fx 6100 for dirt cheap and jumped from a phenom 925, and i regret not saving for a i5.

I really miss my phenom, the fx is hot and consumes like a pig,but atleast i got it to 4 ghz without troubles.

How the heck is the FX6100 hot and a pig compared to a Phenom II?

Bulldozer is bad but there is no need to make it worse than it really is.

I can certainly recommend the FX-4300 and 6300. They are great performers for the money.

@GaiaHunter

I was wondering the same thing when I read his comment. There are a lot of thess claims of it being power hog while actual tests show us otherwise.

You have no ideea what your talking about.

My phenom maxed out at 40 celsius at 1.35 VOLTS

My FX 6100 maxes out at 55 celsius at 1.35 VOLTS (same cooler, same Motherboard)

Thats 15 degres + at the same voltage against a older 45 NM part.

I can see a Phenom idling at 40 with that voltage, not running at full tilt. The FX temp is more plausible, and still good for being your max.

Who told you that higher temperature of CPU means it draws higher power draw? Does that mean that IB is more power hungry than SB?
Of course it doesn't mean that. Power draw and temps can be related but comparing two different CPU designs just using temperatures as a metric to draw a power draw conclusion is ludicrous. It may be "hotter" CPU but it doesn't use more power as Xbitlabs test clearly shows.

That test clearly shows no sign of a 95 W Phenom in there bro

It's simple, 125W 955Be in that chart is 30W above 925 you had (unless you undervolted it,in which case you can do the same with new FX too). So subtract 30W from 955's number and you get 117W in full load, still some 10W more than FX6100 at stock. Even if you allow as high of variance as 10W (suppose that your 925 was very good specimen) you end up at the same power level as FX6100.

All of this is stock vs stock of course. When you go into OCing none of that is valid anymore (unless you managed to OC both chips by just a multiplier/htt and you didn't touch Vcore at all-then power draw increase is more or less linear with clock increase).

my budget is around 275-280$....
and to those who think i should save to get better graphics card...i already have a gtx550ti...

In March of last year, Anandtech described the gtx 550 ti as 'coming up short at $150,' so I am sure most opinions of that model have not changed much since then, especially since you would have to do some real shopping to find one that is more than $20 cheaper, today.

In short, If you play games, a better GPU will grant you more game performance than a new CPU.

I've a FX6100 right here in the same box I had a Phenom II X4 with a Xigmatek Gaia, and the temperature at max isn't that much higher (around 55ºC vs 51ºC with prime or AMD stability test, but the FX6100 is 1.39v vs 1.38).

Which of course makes sense, since they consume similar amounts of power and so will dissipate similar amounts of heat.

How about this:

Intel Core i5-2500K - $220
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...5072&Tpk=2500k

MSI Z68A-G43 - $70-$15= $55
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...l-Motherboards

$290 before rebate, $275 after, buys you a 2500K and a motherboard you can overclock it on. Stock cooler and cheap board are probably still good enough for a 25% overclock and if you're gaming, Piledriver doesn't stand a snowflake's chance against an overclocked Sandy.

Not bad but I doubt newegg ships to India.

:)

To the OP - what do you do with your machine? Mostly gaming or video work or what?

Also, what kind of CPU do you currently have? If an AMD quad already, you aren't really going to see much improvement in many tasks going to the FX-6100.

But if your primary purpose is gaming, a new GPU will have a much larger impact than any CPU upgrade.

This thread would have greatly benefited from a set of complete system specs from the start, I must say...

OP, you say that you already have a 550ti, and also say that you "can opt for an i5(with a 70-75$ mobo)" -- but there's no mention of a mobo on the AMD side of things. Am I right in assuming that you currently have a AMD system for which the Thuban- or Zabezi-based chips would be drop-in upgrades?

In any case, and I don't know about the prices in India, but if your board -- assuming that you have one already -- can support an FX-6300 (and assuming that those are going to show up in your neck of the woods as fast as they did in North America, and with relatively similar pricing) then that's likely the CPU I would be looking at.

As for 1075T/FX-6100 VS i5... That's a comparison which seems to often end up in Intel's favor, if you can afford the higher cost upfront.

But that 6300... Man -- and given it's price point, particularly -- that's a pretty sweet chip...

Oh, also, how much you use the computer at full load (24/7 Distributed Computing comes to mind as a pretty extreme case) can play into the cost difference between the competing solutions quite significantly over a few years. (dunno how much electricity costs you either.)

dude the problem is i currently have just the amd athlon x2 5200+...so u can imagine the bottleneck i have(yeah yeah i know,a biggie)...and i bought the gtx 550ti a few days back...starting of october...so no gpu change..n i am gonna play at a res of 1366x768...so i really think i dont need a better gpu than i already have to play all games maxed out...isn it..
and to others..either i get amd or i5,i will have to get everything brand new...including ram...thats y i am eyeing a gud cpu...

yes my main purpose is gaming...and i don have a quad cpu already...amd athlon x2...hehehe...and i play at 1366x768 reso...so no need for a better gpu...

i5 if you can swing it but really the FX-6300 doesn't look like a bad chip if you can't get an i5 at a reasonable price - I'd personally take it over an i3 because I enjoy overclocking. The i5 is preferable though, even if it's not a K-series.

I would get the FX4300 or 6300, they will be just fine for your GTX550Ti.
